Has the paint been taken care of?

I would imagine the clear coat is still on. You just need to use a clay bar on it to get off all the surface contaminants.

Then use a polish to clean the paint back up. Then put on a good wax or polymer.

Try claybar on the hood and see if you still feel the roughness. I think it may be some contaminents. About the rust cannot say anything. Can you post the pic?

What's a good polish to use before using a polymer such as NXT?

Depends on the condition of your paint.

The Meguairs or Mothers polish's are good. 3M makes some good products.

You will want to get the product that is the finest cut to get the job done.

Autopia is a great source for DIY.

I usually dont buy any consumer line products, and the only Megs stuff im familiar with is their 1-2-3 punch as i like to call it. You could go with the "Body scrub" which is a pretty decent cleaner/polish......Also Mothers makes a 1-2-3 punch set-up....Prewax cleaner, then sealer/glaze....Then the NXT....

hey the rust spot look a like is the fall outs that all car get, but see it more on the white colors... to get them off you can claybar, but i would use wet/dry sand paper grit 2000... after this is done then use rubbing conpound, then finish it of with finishing conpound... body work and detailing is my line of work.
