Cleaning Exhaust tips?

Hey guys,
I was washing my car the other day and tried cleaning my exhaust tips.. When I was cleaning them I noticed that there was black streaks on them(i noticed them before bu never really tried to clean them).. like the polished part was coming off? Is the polish coming off or is there a way to clean these off somehow?
Thanks!

Bar keeps friend! Someone posted the pics recently and it looked frickin awesome

Though i'm not sure what he used in regards to a sponge.. maybe just a standard sponge? I would think something rough would scratch the crap out of the tips.. Better safe than sorry!

Here is the original thread:

The pics say it all!

I did mine with a Meguiars polish. Any polishing compound should work. Just put some elbow grease into it.

Heres a pic of mine:

I want to polish the tips on my Type S, but it seems as though they have more of a brushed finish to them. I use NevR Dull on them, but they don't "shine"-they keep that polished look.

are you using a buffing wheel, powerball or power cone or something on the cordless drill?
that will make fast work of any polishing job- 2500rpm versus you 25rpm
Even a dremel with the little buffer pad will do nicely

Mothers metal polish with the above setups is working really well on my 86 honda VT1100bike- to bring all the chrome bits, like the rims, back to `like new`... from a dull flat grey

AnthraciteAspec -- how did you get your exhaust tips extended beyond the aspec kit? I have been trying to figure out how to do this... I hate how the kit hides the tips!

haha I hated it as well it drove me nuts. I had them done, basically sawzall, add in a couple inches of piping, weld it up. Here is the thread I made:

Steven, Nevr-Dull is more of an abrasive agent used to remove imperfections than a polish, so you won't get that mirror shine but it will get all the gunk and grime off with some elbow grease.

Some good products to follow the Nevr-Dull with to shine up your tips are: NXT Metal Polish, Flitz Polish, Mothers Metal Polish, One Grand Chrome Polish or Surf City Metal Polish.

Check with Patrick (ExcelDetail) in Wash & Wax...I think he carries most if not all of those products.

It worked like a charm. Used a toothbrush and some "Bar Keeper Friend" powder mixed with a few drops of water.

It cleaned by rotor rust as well.

I used Turtle Wax bug and tar remover. Just soak them down, let sit out of sun for 5 min, wipe them off. worked pretty well. You might need 000 steel wool if they are really bad

Depending on the condition I used 0000 steel wool if it's really bad (with an APC). Then follow up with a good metal polish and microfiber to shine it up. You can always start out with just a microfiber to see if that's all you need for the job.

^^ You should be able to get it from any hardware store. I went to Home Depot or Lowes. For me I didn't take off the rear bumper...not sure if that is really needed??

I have Bar Keepers at my work (Ace Hardware), Any Ace store if they don't have it would be glad to order it for you, and we/they have 0000 and up steel wool in stock, kind of a Hardware store staple, like nails and what not.

You could try a 3M Delicate duty scotch brite sponge too (blue and white) or a thing called a Chore Boy Scrubbing Cloth: http://www.choreboyscrubbers.com/products.htm

Exhaust Tailpipe

Two things that can ruin the freshly detailed look of a vehicle; dirty glass or exhaust tips; the exhaust tips can sometimes make or break the rear view of an otherwise pristine vehicle. Spray down the inside and outside of the tips with P21S® Total Auto Wash or P21S® Polishing Soap, allow to to remain in place, it will to start break down the grime. To clean the outside parts of the exhaust use either a Mini E-Z Detail brush (they are perfect for cleaning the areas between dual-tips) or an old micro fibre used strictly for dirty jobs and Optimum Metal Polish.

Use #0000 synthetic steel or bronze wool (very fine grade) with P21S® Total Auto Wash to clean out the insides of the exhaust tips. Polish using P21S® Polishing Soap (not intended for use on painted, clear coated or anodized surfaces) and/or Optimum Metal Polish and #0000 synthetic steel or bronze wool on the insides of the tips

Now move on to the outside of the tips once again with Optimum Metal Polish and an older microfiber towel that is no longer used for the painted surfaces, ensure to polish with the grain.

Note:
1. The inside of some vehicles exhaust tips are painted with a matte black heat resistant paint, do not use wire or bronze as this will remove the paint. This type of finish can be renewed by cleaning them well, and spraying High Temp Flat Black (Matte) Satin Paint that is available from n auto store (Dupli Color)
2. Dinan tips are titanium with the all-blue tip clean with soap and water. No use in using a metal polish as there's nothing to shine
