? for those who are running LED Rear Turn Signals
Hey, I'm planning on buying some rear turn signals for my 08 Base TL and I was wondering what color are most of you running for the rear turn signals?
I remember reading awhile back on another website indicating that if you plan on purchasing LED's for the brake lights or turn signals, it's recommended to get the bulb color to match the diffusing housing color.
IE - On some cars, the brake light area is red (Think of the 04-06 tail lights). Since the brake light area is red, I was told that you should get red LED's instead because if you get white, the red diffuser in the brake housing will filter out every color except for red and when using a WHITE led bulb it will result in a much lighter red color, almost pink. I've witnessed this on other peoples cars while driving.
I went outside to inspect my base 08 tail lights, and while looking at my turn signal area I noticed it does have a red diffuser or lense (sorry if i'm calling it the wrong term). I'm kinda worried that throwing a 68SMD or 96SMD WHITE LED in it's place will result in a pink as heck color.
So for the members on here that are running WHITE or RED LED's in the rear turn signals, can you post pictures or just let me know what you think?

Just incase someone else is wondering or also interested, here are the bulbs I was looking at
7440 - 68SMD - WHITE - http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2X-T2...#ht_4518wt_907
7440 - 96SMD - WHITE http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/7443-...item35b343277d

Don't get white leds for the rear turn signals. /thread

Ended up purchasing 2x of these - http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=380371818928
I didn't really like the idea of having white as my rear turn signals because i plan on getting my tail lights done soon, and if I do decide to get the lense tinted from red to black a red led bulb would look more like a turn signal still

In some really cases, at certain angles, it might bleed white light. Otherwise it will indeed be pink. And I'm sure you don't want pink.
So you went with the right decision going for the red LEDs.
I put a 68SMD LED in my turn signals [they are yellow] and it became very pale. The yellow color was very light as opposed to halogens.
Also our rear turn signals are 7440----but 7443s MIGHT still work.
And I say MIGHT because I put in a [burnt] 68SMD switchback in the rear and it still worked. [the amber solders were burnt and it only lit-and-flashed white].
And lastly, on another note, make sure you install resistors. I highly recommend Roger505's resistor modification. Seen here: https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-2004-2008-93/g-109-diy-eliminate-led-bulb-induced-hyper-flashing-without-load-resistors-815219/

As for the resistor mod, I PMed a member and bought a 0.24ohm resistor off of him for $1/ea and it should be coming in anyday now. Thanks for the heads up!

SMD stands for Surface Mount Diode and is referring to how many diodes are on the tree. 1 SMD = 3 LED's
Basically the more SMD a bulb is, the brighter it will be.
For pics just google search images or check on eBay.

Actually, SMD just refers to a surface mounted device =)
Lumens is the term for brightness.
The 18 SMD means there are 18 LEDs on the board.
The 40 SMD means there are 40 LEDs on the board.
So yes, you're right about it being the count of how many LEDs are on it.
I wish the more LEDs are on the board the brighter they are.
I have 120 SMD LEDs on each of my turn signal bulbs.
Lets just say they are not as bright as the V3 Tritons, or even the 60 SMD LEDs I saw my friend had on his switchbacks.

My 120 SMD bulbs:
SMD doesn't only apply to LEDs, all the resistors and capacitors in your smartphone are SMD.
Here's an SMD resistor:
Here's a non-SMD resistor:
Oh, and here's a non-SMD LED:
Hope that helps your understanding =)

Only get red LED for the rear turns. Tower LEDs are junk! I haven't tried so many types and not only do they typically have horrible output especially in any sort of sunlight, but there are so many LEDs mounted on those they just look terrible inside the housings. Do it right the first time and be done with it..... VLed V3 Triton! See my thread and you will be sold! They are incredible bulbs.
Edit: Lol I see someone brought this thread up from the dead. Back when this thread started they didn't have the V3 Tritons, but anyway what I said above is still 100% true.

get the triton v3 leds if you want top of the line. I got a pair of leds from my local lighting store they are kinda close to the v3's but for 1/3 of the price. if you want to be brightest and baddest got to go with the v3 tritons though

V led triton if you want to be safe!
Non informative turn signal bulbs can create possible problem IF, IF! You get involved in car accident.
Whatever seller say and promise -final responsibilities is yours! IMHO

I ran with the towers in the front and the back for a few months. I decided to upgrade to the Tritons after numerous close calls with people almost T-boning me thinking i was going to head straight instead of left.
Believe me, nobody can see that christmas toy led tower with the sun out.

and I believe that they are the 2nd best alternative. It puts tower leds to shame.
Tritons in red are rated at 210 lumens. $100
The ones I've been linking has 170 Lumens. $50
40 lumens isn't really a big difference to be paying $50 extra for..
red Tower LEDs are probably 50 lumens max

Next time you get a chance during the middle of the day with the sun out nice and bright go turn on your turn signal and walk back about 50+ feet and see how bright they actually look.... I had 68 red SMD towers for my rear turn signal for a very long time and when you press your brake pedal your brake lights will OVER POWER the turn signal. Anytime the brake lights are engaged the turn signal is hard to see.

Those are the bulbs I was looking at. My only question is what base type do I need? It says there is a 'standard base' or a 'ck base'. I'm assuming the standard but I'd hate to waste time ordering the wrong ones. Which ones worked for you?

The car looks sick. We'll have to meet up soon, i'd like to see it in person. I live/work close to where you live.
