Sorry first oil change comming up....do you have to take it to the dealership? or could i just take it to jiffy lube....what kind of oil do you guys use!! I need to know soon because i want to do this today becaues i'm leaving this weekend for a trip! thanks guys

Changing the oil is pretty easy. Just jack up the front and remove the passanger front tire and you there you go you have easy access to your oil filter.

I went to a strauss auto near where I live to do my oil change. I provided them with oil and filter. Cost me $15 though. I used Pennzoil Platinum 5W-20 full synthetic with a mobil 110 filter.

Buy the filter and oil and bring it too a shop if you don't know how to do it yourself (though you should learn sometime when you have the car). I am starting to put Penzoil Synthetic just because Walmart has a amazing deal on them and almost all synthetic are same.

It's nice changing your own oil and all but I saw some scumbags in Queens who did this and dumped the used oil into the sewer.

Wouldn't it be simpler to go to a lube shop, have them change the oil (10-20 minutes) and pay 20 bucks instead of crawling under your car, draining the oil into a drip pan, and refilling the used quart containers with the old oil, and transport the used oil to your nearest lube shop to recylce said oil. No? It would be understandable if it cost 200 bucks to change the oil.

I think the first service should on a brand new car should be done at the dealer-
just so they have a chance to look underneath and make sure everything is ok with your new car.
They also run the VIN and see if any recall fixes have popped up for it
Gen 3 has PS issues~

From then on do your own changes, or the neighbor kid taking auto shop in school,,anyone but a quick lube- whose techs dont care about drain plug crush washers and torque specs on the bolt. Can destroy an oil pan,, and the engine in worst case scenario!!!

^^ spend $8 on a oil pan that closes up and any autozone will take it for free.. i usually do my changed right at the store.. 20 minutes and im out.

Some of us have a relationship with the car that goes beyond sitting behind the wheel.
Working on the car yourself is a sense of pride and knowing it was done right.
You check the CV boots and look for road damage or fluid leaks.
No one else is going to do that.

A few minutes to drop off the old oil at any parts store is simple part of the test drive after.

test drive after an oil change? yep- any reason to go for a buzz in the TL!

IF you should drop any oil in the process it gets washed into the main water drains and into the environment...bad news for fish and other living things

Most stores have a sign saying not to work on cars there...sure in an emergency
but an oil change??? dont you have a home?

I actually had a tech at a quick lube joint remove one of my spark plugs because I had military plates on my car and he was kicked out of the military. I guess he decided to get back at "The Man" by making my 4 cyl run like crap. At another one across town, the "convicts" changing oil liked my car so much, they got my home address from the computer and came to my apartment to steal the CD player and subwoofer out my car. Needless to say, I do my own oil changes.

worst idea every. 1st: they dont change the filter
2nd they dont let the oil fully drain out
3rd they use some random oil that comes out of a unmarked barrel via a pump.
4th they don't clean the bottom of the car from the extra oil, in fact they do you a solid favor and relube the entire underside because their hands are covered in oil
5th they leave your car running

first and only time there i took my friends beater cause he needed an oil change, it was jiffy lube and that is what they did^

I beg to differ.... all shops love oil changes. Although they make very little money on the oil change itself, their goal is to have your car on the lift to they can provide a free inspection and "find problems" so that they can make money off the repairs.

I had to go to one of those places one time on the girlfriend's Murano because I was taking it on a 500 mile trip and didn't have time to change it. I brought my $10/quart Amsoil and $14 filter to them. I thought everything was fine until the next oil change came up. I got under there and there was the same Mobil One filter I had put on the time before. I went back to square it up with the mechanic who did the change (I remembered him because he was some gangbanger looking fag that kept staring at me) but he had been fired supposedly.

If you have to pay someone, pay the dealer. They are less likely to screw it up and if they do you have a better chance of them making it right.

ive taken my car to the dealership in the first six times since i bought the car with me providing the oil. but now that my friend has a shop, i did my recent one there. bought an oil filter from Acura along with the crush washer, five 1-qt bottles of Mobil 1 0W-20 and did the oil change.

saved around 15 bucks vs bringing it to the dealer even when using my own oil.

LOL. This has been discussed a lot over at bobistheoilguy. What we know for sure right now is it is not a full synthetic. Whether it's grp III or grp III and IV, we don't know.

It's all marketing hype, guys. No better than Mobil One.

Good to know.. I actually heard word of mouth.. I'm sticking to RP & M1, (whichever I get a better deal on at the time). Glad you closed the case on this one for me.

It's a good oil, just pointing out it may not be worth what they're charging for it. You could use Amsoil or Redline, both superior oils for the same price. Either way, the engine will outlast the body so you're fine.

you're right it is a marketing hype.... but when i put it in my car and going over from mobil 1....it made a difference and it feels alive now.

Yeah, I should have. With the spark plug incident, my Honda ran perfectly fine for a week until the computer couldn't compensate for the dead cylinder anymore. I went back to the lube shop (Wal-Mart) and the guy had already been fired. The only thing the manager could do for me was 2 free oil changes. Last time it was a spark plug, what's next, a wheel? - No thanks.

When my car was broken into, I couldn't prove it was the knuckleheads at the lube shop so the police wouldn't do anything. Of course, I knew they did it because of the way they were eying my car when it was in the bay and it wasn't even 24 hours after I got my oil changed when it happened. I didn't go back there because had I did, with my temper, I would have shot one of the kids and been in jail over it. No thanks. Keep the sub and the changer but it will come back on them sooner or later.

Do you work at a lube shop? You think these 'tales' are funny.. They sound pretty *effed up to me. It would behoove you to be aware of the hazards of bringing your car to one of these shops. Unless you know and trust a lube shop for quality work and fair prices.. I'd stay away.. and always bring your own oil and filter and watch them do the work.. I wouldn't put it past some guys to taking your $7/qt RP and gunning crap oil in your engine instead.
