Hey all,

I have noticed the last 3 times I filled my TL that I put in less gas than expected from the guage/computer readouts. For example, today my low fuel light came on, and the trip computer indicated 15 miles to empty...at the station, it would only accept 13.5 gals. The tank is 17.1, so I cannot reconcile the numbers. It is a pain in the rear if I keep filling up early, and if I can't trust the computer. Has anyone else noticed this or had a problem with their sending unit? My car is 2 weeks old, VIN 63xxx. The dealer said they would look into it when I bring it in. I also have an improperly installed BSM, so that the rear one strikes the drivers door when opening. Also, one of my rocker panels (stock) was cut incorrectly, with a ragged edge. They have to order new versions of these.

Otherwise a kickass ride.

This info is excerpted from a very long thread I started about fuel tank capacities, etc. and is based on actual and precise testing.

a. When the low fuel warning light comes on, if you are getting 25 mpg you can go 94 miles, but if you are only getting 20 mpg, you can only go 74 miles. Of course, other miles per gallon figures will result in different results. This means you have approximately 3.7 gallons remaining.

b. When “miles to empty” (2004TL) or “range” (2005TL) reads zero, that is time to fill up, but you can still go 57 miles at 25mpg, but only 45 miles at 20mpg. This means you have approximately 2.3 gallons remaining.

c. When filling the tank, if you stop at the first shutoff, you will have about 17 gallons in the tank.

d. The tank will actually hold about 19 gallons, but it is not recommended to fill the tank to capacity, so stop at the first shutoff.

sounds like I have roughly 3 gallons left when the light comes on. That is fine, my only complaint is that the MID shows such low miles to empty. Our previous Saab had a much more accurate fuel calculation computer, and if I went to 20 mile to empty, that was what I had. With this car, I can only assume that Acura doesn't wish to come fetch a bunch of out of gas owners (which I believe is a service provided until the warranty runs out).

Could be the main factor.

 

every gas tank does this, at least on 98% of the brands out there.... its to cover stupid drivers that don't pay attention to their guages. The car will tell you to fill up, saying it will go empty eventhough in reality there is a 3-4 gallon reserve to cover your ass

I think it was on the 20/20 show, they did a special on this. They were driving a Chrysler mini-van and had taken some gas with them in a gas can. They kept driving until they ran completely out of gas. Anyway, I think they went about 50 miles further after the computer told them they had 0 miles left. They asked several different car manufacturers about this. They did not say which companies. The companies they asked admitted that for cars sold in the US, they put lots of "cushion" in the calculations so that people would not run out of gas, because that is way most Americans expected it to be. However, they said that the cars they sell in Europe are setup to be precise, and when it says you have 1 mile left, you really have one mile left.
