any other symptoms other than the light?

Hows your transmission fluid level and condition? When was the last time you had service done on it including pressure switches and fluid changes?

Chances are, someone is trying to read OBD2 codes instead of transmission codes. If the light is flashing, there are code(s) stored.

I had the Blinking D light last fall. It was a transmission range switch.

I remember a few months before I got rid of mine, my light did that. I had no idea what caused it, but it went away after a short while or after I would turn the car off then restart.

I had the transmission codes read at a transmission shop. I thought the same thing.. the codes had to have stored. The only way I can describe it is the car just doesn't drive smooth and I'll feel like a jolt when the light starts flashing, loss of power and the RPM's will spike and then quickly go down even doing like 50 MPH. As far as the fluids ... just got the car honestly haven't had them checked yet. My info says my oil is 40%

Spiking RPMs == transmission slipping

Check your transmission fluid. At a minimum, you probably will need to drain and replace the fluid. Possibly replace the pressure switches....and if it is really bad, replace the transmission.
