Talking Added 4 more cylinders to my blown tranny TL

Back in August, my TL went to the dealer for the dreaded transmission replacement.

My extended warranty wouldn't approve a direct Acura replacement, but instead put in a used tranny from a 4 cylinder accord. When I got the car back, the shifts were as smooth as butter! But the tranny couldn't handle the amount of power/torque the TL engine was trying to push at it. So the RPM would rev really high and the gear changes were long. The check engine light would also light up every once in a while.

So after dumping so much money into the TL this past year (including many other costly repairs), I realized that my 8 year relationship might be coming to an end.

Here's my new sweetheart.

And these are the last pics of my beloved TL. Still the best car I've ever owned!

And a pic from the dealer's Autotrader website:

The date I brought home the beast:

Additional pics with my wife's MDX:

After tint and roof spoiler:

The M5 is everything the TL is and then some!

I also cross shopped the Genesis R-Spec, but the roar of the V-10 got me! I would have been happy with either one, but this version of the M5 has always been my dream car, so it was chosen by default.

Hope you guys enjoyed the pics and thanks A-zine, for being a great community as I emptied my reserve income on TL mods over the years! I wouldn't trade the experience for anything.

Nice car!

isnt the higher repair cost & lower gas mileage. Such a hard thing to swallow isnt it?

Yes, yes, and no. Driving that car makes all that other stuff worth it.

Thanks ttribe!. Using your experience with your M and your countless advice and wisdom on what to watch out for, this decision was a little easier.

The gas mileage, I was prepared for. And this car was a CPO so I was able to get extended warranty for 4 addtional years or 100,000 miles. That helps a lot! All in all, it was worth it, considering the driving experience.

They put a 4-cyl transmission in your TL!?

Nice upgrade though! You seem to have a thing for black cars.

First mod suggestions - Gloss black kidney grilles; color matched reflectors for the front bumper.

Damn that looks great. Don't leave Azine though; just head over to "Car Talk". That's where most members go once they've moved on from their Acura.

Was a little nervous until you said 4yr/100K warranty...makes owning the car pretty stress-free. Congratulations! I'm sure you'll absolutely love the car.

congrats man, ive looked at the m5 and an s6 at one time when i was toying with the idea of trading in the tl. Maintenance was the biggest factor for me, but that doesnt mean i still wont do it in the future lol. Have fun.

Aman, yeah I love black cars! There's just something elegant and sinister about it. If not black, then white would be my other color.

Yeah, I didn't think a 4 cylinder would bolt up either and still think there's something fishy about the whole explanation. The dealer is totally not at fault because they insisted on another TL transmission. But I was so fed up with the whole thing, I just agreed to whatever the warranty folks would replace it with. I just needed the TL to be drivable so I could trade it in. I placed a deposit to hold the M5 for two weeks while the TL was being worked on. CPO M cars are extremely rare!

I'll still be around! This is a great community to be a part of. Plus, I have an MDX thread that I'm occasionally updating.

I remember seeing your Cadenza thread. That's a sweet ride you got there!
Kia and Hyundai are on a roll right now. The R-Spec Genesis would have been my next car if I didn't find this M.

The i-drive is actually located a little lower of the SMG gear lever.

The M was $47,000. I knocked off 2 grand. Got $11,000 for the TL. Added warranty for $6,000. OTD $44,500 for 4 year term @ 4.7%. Purchased at a BMW dealer, which made the CPO part a little easier.

The previous owner was one of the oil tycoons here in town. All the maintenance was done on time everytime.

congrats on the upgrade man!

but honestly, a k24 transmission will not bolt on to the j series engine, not without heavy modification. no dealership would do that kind of work. maybe they just used different parts for the gears inside thats why it drove differently

6k for a warranty ... I guess you gotta pay to play. Other than that the car looks amazing. Congrats

Edit: So the dealer is just selling the TL with bad tranny?

Believe it or not, they had another warranty option costing $7500.. It covered so much, that it was easier for the brochure to print what wasn't covered.

Well, I'm not sure what happened to the TL after the sale post. It disappeared off their site within a week. I went back there on a Sunday when they were closed and the car was still there in the back lot with hangtags on stating "Service needed." I'm guessing they were gonna fix the issues and send it to auction. Especially with the mileage (124,000)

I agree. My service advisor at the dealer was very skeptical of what the warranty guys were shipping to them. I called the warranty and they told me it was from a 2007 Honda Accord EX. I asked if it was 4 cylinder or 6. They said 4 because it has the same components. . Right then, I knew they had no idea what they were talking about. We went back and forth. They stated it's from the same "type" of car and the 4 cyl would be cheaper. WTF? I just got tired of arguing and told them to put in whatever fits. For all I know, it might not even be from an Accord. (My decision to lose the TL was already made by that point)

When the tranny reached the Acura dealer, my service advisor was upset with the warranty folks for lowballing both of us. I honestly believe the tranny is from a Honda Accord EX V6. What year? I have no idea. How many miles? I have no idea. I just wanted the TL to drive on its own again.

The dealer had some issues with bolt up, but they made it work.
