Talking whining Noise

Greetings from cold Chicago! I picked up my 05 TL AT Navi RRP/Carmel a week ago. No rattles or vibrations so far! I'm loving every minute of driving this beautiful machine....However, I do hear minor whining noise in 1st and 2nd gear when I accelerate from a stop. Is this normal??

Talking Yes

Yes, this is normal.

Look over to your right through the window. You'll see some poor slob in his G35 watching you pass him - and whining.

I've heard it on a 05 TL that I test drove too... not sure what it is. Maybe a tire thing? Do you have Navigation?

Navi cars have different tires than non-navi. It could be the way the Michelin tires run.

I know with my Bridgestone Potenzas I get a low droning noise... yours might be the same except at a much higher frequency? Just a guess.

I'm going out on a limb here, since I don't even know if the tires are the reason for the high-pitched whine - but if so, it's because of the tread design. Certain treads will react differently with asphalt than other treads. Like I mentioned before, when I drive at lower speeds you can hear the low droning from my tires. The same could be occurring with yours.

It's a feature!

It sounds much more like the sound is from the engine area than from the tranny or the tires.

I have heard it for the 4 weeks and 900 miles on my 05 TL. At first I was concerned.. Now I use the whistle as a guide to tell me when to upshift my SportShifter. Otherwise, the car and engine are so quiet I might forget that I am still in second gear while cruising at 55 mph!

Could be your heat shield. Mine was loose and it would make this awful winding/whining sound when accelerating. It was most noticeable around 2k rpm. The dealer has tightened my heat shield twice now. So far, no more problems...

Another 05 Navi owner with the problem - of course, it's probably NOT the tires, but it's definitely a possibility. Question to ask now is whether there are any non-navi 05 TL owners with the same problem!

I have a '05 Navi 5AT .. I notice the same thing, it almost sounds like when back in the day you install an aftermarket amplifier on your stereo and it's getting engine feedback because it's not grounded good. However the sound system was off and I hear the same thing. On second thought... doesn't the voice activation stuff always stay on? I wonder if it's an issue with the audio/voice/navi/ possibly handsfreelink system not being grounded correctly.

Just thinking out loud.

Hi all,

The noise could be the alternator. I have had the same thing in my toyota. It is a low, steady whine until I get to about 50 MPH. It varies with engine RPM's?

Had a whining noise up to about 2k rpm...was most noticeable when right at 2k...it was a loose heat shield...they've fixed it twice, and so far, it seems to be ok...

Yep; it's almost certainly the heat shield. I had this same problem- it almost sounds like a belt squealing, right? Your dealer will remove and replace the heat shield and that should fix it right up.

My dads current car(ford taurus does this). I am not sure exactly what the reason is. (what exactly does it do and where is the heat shield?) Then again his car has worn bearings(for all the belt driven accesories), makes popping noises around turns, and jumps forward at a astop after the 5 second downshift delay.

My car does the same thing, or atleast I think its what everyone is describing. Mine starts around 2k and stops around 3k RPMs. I havent noticed anyone describing the noise like this but mine almost sounds like the valves are rattling. When I was 16 I had a Monte Carlo with a V8 and when I put cheap gas in it the valves rattled. I am at 4500 miles and started noticing around 2500. I have only put premium gas in my car. I decided to wait until the oil was changed and have it checked. I took it yesterday and sure enough, as I expected, was told it was "normal". On the invoice it stated the car was compared to a new one on the lot. I didnt have the time so I just accepted the car back. I am going to make an appt again and make sure someone can ride with me.

Have them check the A pipe heat shield. Mine made the exact same whislting noise between 2000 rpm - 2500 rpm. They replaced the A pipe heat shield and no more noise.

ummm, this noise is only made when i move forward. if i put it on Park or Neutral and rev to 2500RPM it doesn't make that sound. if i reverse, it also doesn't make a sound. how normal is that?

if it's related to air filter, shouldn't it make the noise everytime i hit 2500RPM?

That's what i'm talking about. I hear it on mine when my car is moving under 25 mph. It's the same on the G35. They sound like the jets on an airplane when it's moving slow on the ground. If you want a completely quiet car, get a camry.

i don't mind the noise as long as it doesn't relate to any problems. i am not one of those owners who complain about the littlest of rattles, i've moved pass that. but after doing my little test, i'm assuming it's related to the wheel/axle area. at least 1 person has linked it to heat pipe. the sound comes from the passenger side. i doubt it's the intake since our intake is on the driver side

so why is it that i can only hear that sound when the car is moving but i don't hear it when on park or neutral? if i can get a reasonable explanation to this then i'll be content and believe it's something normal. other than that, i'm looking at as something abnormal

Mine does the same thing. I just got it on Sat., and it has about 150 miles on it. Seems to be working fine, so I doubt it should have any negative effect.
