Will the dealer update the maps at the time of service? If so, I won't bother trying to do it myself.

I tried downloading the maps update using the Map Downloader app from https://acuranavi.navigation.com/home/en_US/AcuraNA/USD
However, after the download of maps data to USB (which took > 20 min, after which I stopped watching it), I tried taking it to the car and plugging it into both USB ports while the car was on navigation, but the car didn't seem to recognize the USB drive. I tried the both USB ports -- the one above near the arm rest and the one below the center console.
(There are other files on that USB drive in addition to the navigation download.)
Unlikely you downloaded the complete update (>14 Gb) in 20 minutes. For most people, it takes a couple hours. Try it again and pay attention. It should tell you the progress. I think there are over 1000 parts (1,005?).

I checked up till 20 min and it was not done. After that I left it running but had to leave. When I got back about an hour and a half later, the app said the download had completed successfully.
I think it is recommended that you install the map file to a freshly formatted drive. And I think the drive is not supposed to be larger than 64gb or maybe it was 128gb - I can’t remember but I think there was something about not being able to recognize larger drives.
The only USB with data connection is the one in the armrest, so that’s where it should be plugged in.
Side note; Acura isn’t getting a lot of appreciation from me around their service for maps, infotainment, and AcuraLink - supper really sucks.

When you switched drives, did you just copy the files over or did you re-download?

You can just copy them over as long as the folder and the file structure are complete / intact. I keep a backup on my laptop and after they replaced my head unit, it had an old map version. I updated again from my backup.
You can have other files on the USB, as long as the folder named "HereMapsV1" is in the root of the drive. That's what the car looks for.
I've used the same USB for all 3 map updates so far. 32 Gb formatted in FAT32. I know that works

I managed to find a 32GB drive, but the copy operation failed. I may have to try and find a different one.
I called to schedule for service (B 1 2 7). Got an appointment for May 22. The person making the appointment said that they should be able to update the maps. If I find a different drive before then, I'll give it another shot.

After downloading to the USB for over an hour, I plugged in the usb and it said something like “map updating”. How can i tell what is going on, and how long should it take? I don’t like to let my car stay running in case nothing is happening. Am i supposed to get some kind of progress info?
Nope. They leave you hanging. A progress bar seems beyond their programming expertise.
If your usb has a light when it is reading, there is that. If not, getting on and off the map will tell you it is uploading. Other than that, wait for it to finally say it is done.
I could take a few dozens of minutes, or several hours.
On the upside, the map update is virtually useless, so there’s that.
Every time I've done it, it took between 50-60 minutes. I still have the USB in the car with the latest update but I just haven't driven anywhere where I know I'll be in the for at least an hour.
Thanks It did finish, but when I checked the version via "help" it was still the 2019 and I was still getting "map out of date" messages. I checked again maybe 1/2 hour later, and voila! the date is now in 3/21~ I forget the date. Also, I think some of the prior "map out of date" messages have disappeared. So I am calling it a win. I wonder how many Acura owners are going to go through this aggravation - seems kind of archaic to have to update things this way.

Every map update seems to be about a 15 Gb download of the complete collection. If it were done OTA, it would take hours over a 4G network.
The first time I downloaded an update, I was still using an old 802.11g router. It took more than 5 hours, which is still way faster than 4G. Since then, I upgraded to an AX router. The last couple map updates took about 30 minutes.
Kind of funny that I can download the update to USB in about half the time it takes to then load it into the car.
I just checked and noticed the latest map update is 2021.08.04. I don't know when it became available or if anyone posted about it. I just downloaded it. Took me about 35 minutes. If you want to check, go here:

Acura needs better instructions -- tell us what size stick to use (if there are limits on the down side or up side) and any other things to check for (speed issues or whatever). I've had too many failures and it's frustrating to just keep trying and failing even though it seems like I'm following instructions to the T.

Thanks @NooYawkuh . I think this is probably the fourth or fifth update since I bought my car and how many have Acura ever notified me about? Zero.
I like my car, but Acura’s customer service doesn’t make it easy.
I posted above the versions I've installed since I got my 2019. I don't think there were any I missed.
No they don't make it easy but there's no practical way to install a 15Gb image OTA. It would take hours. Even from the USB, it takes about an hour to upload to the car after you've downloaded it. I guess it's better than having to order CDs.
What seems ridiculous to me is having to download and install software just to download and install software.

No, the installed map has no way of knowing it's out of date. There's no OTA connection. I just check the web site every so often. I've never been notified by email of an update and I'm registered at the owner's site. But if you log in to the owners site, I think there's a link to the navigation site.
I just wonder for how long we will receive free map updates. Do any o' yous long-time Acura owners have any idea?
The system does have the ability to provide a map out of date message. Back in October 2019, a map update was posted but later removed. Those of us who installed it got a map out of date message when using the nav that persisted until a new update was released in 2020. This was before Apple CarPlay was enabled, and was very annoying.
This happened to several of us after the last update (2021.03.18) and was discussed in other threads, referenced in another posting:
There is a second discussion regarding this issue (here). Someone indicated it is related to the "Connected" feature of the navigation in that same thread (here).

Yes indeed, that is what I am seeing. My maps are really out of date. It still shows it even now every time I use the nav, which is probably once a month if that.

So much ti like about the RDX, and so much that us just perpetually aggravating and so much of what is aggravating is that touch pad and the world of electronics and software that live behind it. I update my phone apps I don't know how many times a week, 100% problem free, even my new LG TV updates frequently, no sweat. But my 40something thousand dollar car!!!....My SIL has had zero issues updating anything on his 2021 Ford Ranger How does Acura get so much right, but critical things...so wrong.
I have only updated the map once to 2020.10.09.
So, I downloaded the newest map this morning to a 32GB USB drive (FAT32) with 27GB space left and it went on without any issue. The HERE map folder with all the files was around 15.4GB. I believed that I have used this same USB drive to update the map last time.
Turned the car on ACC mode, waited until the system booted, inserted the USB drive and a few seconds later, it prompted ".... incorrect state...error,... contact dealer". The message repeated again a few seconds later.
Turn off the car, plugged the USB drive, and turn it back on to ACC mode, but nothing happened after a couple of minutes.
Turned off the car, turned it back on again to ACC mode, waited for the system to boot up, then connected the USB drive. This time, no error and it prompted updating map and then the message went away. about 50 minutes later, I came back to the car and saw a updated completed message and then it went away and the power went off. I started the engine, checked the map version and it was the 2021 version.

Why not Sandisk? I have used Sandisk and only Sandisk, not for any particular reason, but I have about a dozen of them and have never had an Acura , or any issue. That seems odd.

Yeah, seems very strange. This is their message:
"It is recommended that downloads are on a USB 2.0 memory stick with at least 32GB of free storage space with the FAT32 format. It also should not be a Sandisk USB. If the USB doesn't meet this criteria the update might not work."
Also, you can use a USB 3.0 or 3.1. I've used the same 3.0 drive for all the map updates. It won't update any faster because the car's data port is 2.0 but it will work.
I don't know if the FAT32 requirement still applies. exFAT might work now. Here are the latest instructions on the download page:

I don't know about the SanDisk thing or what it's all about but if FAT32 is still a requirement, they may just want you to limit the USB size because there's a limit you can format in FAT32. It's either 32 or 64 Gb (I forget). Beyond that, Windows won't give you the option. I think you can force it at the command line or you might have to partition the USB drive to make it smaller. I think if you partition a USB drive, you'll lose access to the remaining portion. You can't partition a USB into smaller drives. Only one of them will be available. Doesn't make much sense.
