B16 service - just an fyi

Just hit 15,000 miles and went in for the B16. This is oil, tires, etc and also the rear differential fluid. I did it even though I doubt it’s in dire need. Runs about $170 if you’re wondering. I got some discounts though so my whole service was about $200.

They said my tires and brakes were basically brand new which is surprising to show virtually no wear given the amount of driving I do.

And if you kiss a curb and want a new rim, it’s $647 so I recommend not doing that. 😆

$170 just for the rear diff? Glad I usually DIY that for about $20.

But don't put it off. The rear diff fluid has additives to deal with the friction of the constantly slipping clutch plates ( similar to a limited slip diff ). Failure to replenish it could cause premature wear and shuddering, and that would mean a new rear diff to the tune of maybe $2000 or so installed. This isn't your Grandpa's 4x4 truck.

If you get tired of looking at the rim boo-boo, check the sites that sell refinished OEM rims. Looks like $260-$290 from these guys, depending on the trim. Plus whatever it costs you to get the tire swapped over ( maybe $20 ? )

https://www.hubcaphaven.com

But if the wheels are just powder-coated ( paint ), without any machined surfaces ( Tech ), it may be possible to smooth and touch-up the rim. I'm told there are services that do this in some areas.

ideally one would change the fluids and inspect the components themselves, or have an indie mechanic do it for much cheaper than $170

agreed. More than I’d like to be spending on service but I trust my dealers service.

I’ll be doing my own rear diff when the time comes, very easy to replace the fluid, when is the transmission change expected to be done then at 30k? And I wonder if the diff is every 15k or now 30k after the first time

Thanks for the report. Mine is due pretty soon (15,600 miles, 30% oil life left), so it will be interesting to see how bad my dealer hits me for this "checkup".

Most dealers have a "wheel guy" that fixes scrapes on wheels for under $150. You can also go to a detailing shop and probably get it done for $125.

That's a steal of a deal. I paid just shy of $300 for my B16 service back in October 2018 at around 15k. This was at an independent shop too. I called the dealer and they were asking $325 for the same service. Then again, I live in NorCal and everything is expensive. The A12 maintenance indicator just showed up last week; scared to see what that service is going to set me back. I have around 27k on my RDX.

Just did my own B16 service as a DIY.

Total cost: ~$25 total, and

Rear differential fluid; bought 10 quarts for $40 so about $4 a quart with crush washers.

Cost breakdown:
  • Acura OEM RD Fluid, 2x, $8
  • Acura OEM Oil filter, $3
  • Pennzoil Platinum 0w-20, $12

My B16 service was $325!! Swell.

I am thinking that I've had Acura's for 20 years now and I've done every damn service. That never helps me on trade-ins. It really doesn't help me much in the day to day operation of the car, so what the hell's the point of these checkups except to make the dealership money.

If it wasn't for the fact that this car has a turbo, I would just stop them all together.

Hmmm... Wondering if Acura Care would cover B16. I bought that, plus extended warranty.

I'm not anywhere near 15,000 miles -- just made me curious because I'm at 20% oil level so the maintenance minder hasn't popped up yet (and won't until it drops to 15%) for the oil change, lube, and tire rotation service, but going in tomorrow ahead of an upcoming road trip.

The service advisor quoted me something I have to pay (and it wasn't cheap), but when I double-checked with the guy in the Finance department who sold me Acura Care and the extended warranty, he said NO, give them your Acura Care plan number--you pay nothing. He even sent me a photo he took of the paperwork in my files to show the Service guys my plan number when I go in tomorrow.

Weird that the Service department wouldn't know this information when they pulled me up in their system to schedule the appointment that they shouldn't be trying to charge me anything. Disturbing.
