Windows XP Pro 64bit edition

32-bit Operating systems, such as Windows NT and Windows 2000, support up to 4 gigabytes (GB) of memory. Over the years, 32-bit Windows applications have not only grown in size, the need for applications to have the ability to manipulate large amount of data have dramatically increased. Today million of users around the world need to access terabytes of data in real time and the demand for an advanced, scalable architecture that can support a large amount of memory is understandable. The obvious question is: should you be considering a move to 64-bit Windows?

In keeping with the business demand for a highly scalable, advanced, 64-bit platform that supports a large memory footprint, Microsoft is developing the next generation of Windows, which is based on Intel's 64-bit chip. The IA-64 systems with their advanced floating point arithmetic extensions, and powerful multiprocessing features will compliment Microsoft's 64-bit Windows platform to meet the demands of today's high-end businesses. Organizations dealing in online data processing, large scale data warehousing, e-commerce, high-end graphics and multimedia, will appreciate the benefits of moving to a 64-bit platform.

Microsoft has designed Windows XP 64-bit Edition to support 16 GB of RAM and eight terabytes (TB) of virtual memory. With this level of support, organizations will be able to use a single desktop for high-end technical applications as well as the standard business applications. In addition, most 32-bit Windows applications will operate seamlessly in a Windows on Windows 64 (WOW64) subsystem on Windows XP 64-bit Edition.

Compared to the 4GB of physical memory that 32-bit Windows supports, a 64-bit operating system can support up to 16 GB of memory, as mentioned above. The increased memory has several benefits. Larger amount of RAM means we can run more applications in physical memory and avoid paging to the slower hard disks. We can also support larger number of users and the performance is enhanced because applications can store larger amount of data in memory, which results in improved data access. The end result will be that you will lower your total cost of ownership not only because you can save on hardware costs (fewer servers), but you will also save time and money in management overhead.

Developers of games will be able to take advantage of 64-bit performance boost by reducing the time spent in digitally rendering three-dimensional models. From the aerospace engineers to the automobile manufacturers, the CAD/CAM engineers to 3D animators, 64-bit architecture will be beneficial in improving calculation speeds and providing a large memory set for mission-critical applications.

Introducing 64-bit Windows
A 64-bit operating system supports far more physical memory than a 32-bit operating system. For example, 32-bit Windows NT® supports 4 gigabytes of memory, while 64-bit Windows NT supports 16 terabytes of memory. The increased physical memory includes the following benefits for applications:

Each application can support more users. All or part of each application must be replicated for each user, which requires additional memory.
Each application has better performance. Increased physical memory allows more applications to run simultaneously and remain completely resident in the system's main memory. This reduces or eliminates the performance penalty of swapping pages to and from disk.
Each application has more memory for data storage and manipulation. Databases can store more of their data in the physical memory of the system. Data access is faster because disk reads are not necessary.
Applications can manipulate large amounts of data easily and more reliably. Video composition for motion picture work requires 64-bit Windows for this reason. Modeling for scientific and financial applications benefits greatly from memory-resident data structures that are not possible on 32-bit Windows®.
There are also important benefits for businesses:

Increased productivity. Knowledge workers can spend their time thinking and producing, rather than waiting for the software to finish its tasks.
Lower cost of ownership. Each server can support larger numbers of users and applications, so your business will require fewer servers. This translates directly into less management overhead—one of the highest costs in any computing environment.
New application opportunities. New applications can be designed without the barriers imposed by 32-bit Windows. New graphics applications will make work easier and more enjoyable. Data-intensive tasks that are impossible today can be done with 64-bit Windows.

this os will kick ass

only drawback right now is IBM intel itanium processor:
10k0050 800mhz 4mb cache itanium proc $ 6726.00

in laymens terms ... its DOHC vs SOHC the new intel chip will be doin double the work as the old one did at any given time... like in dohc having 2 cam gears takes the work load off the single one and makes the car run better and the important one QUICKER ... sorry acura service im kinda a computer guy and even that was a little confusin for me had to simplify a little...

( ^ denotes "to the power of" )

We all know data is stored in bits (binary digits) of 1's and 0's, hence the 2 below

a byte is 8
2^8 = 256 bytes memory cells where data is stored

32bit: 2^8 x 2^8 x 2^8 x 2^8 = 2^32 i.e. 32bits of memory

64bit: 2^32 x 2^32 = 2^64 i.e. 64bits of memory

that's the fundamental difference, and its a huge disparity

Gee... I think I learned more about CPU usage in that post than my senior year in college... What was this posts purpose anyway?

Its going to be interesting how AMD's 64 Bit Hammer comes in to play with this. Chip sales would go nowhere without a 64 bit OS to run. Hammer offers 32 and 64 bit performance for a quarter the price. The Intel chip has to run 32 bit software in emulation, while the AMD can run it localy. Maybe AMD will look to Sun for a 64 bit os.
