Upgrade from Vista .......
You can download the ISO legally from the sevenforums. Then you can probably find a hack for it somewhere if you don't have a product key. I would just do a clean install though because then you're killing two birds with one stone IMO.
If you don't want to go that route, why not just follow the path in the registry to those folders and delete it?

I wouldn't go with the Win 10 beta since it ends in April and then he will just need to go though the process all over again.
