who makes the the best 40 GB hard drive?

Hey, I'm looking to upgrade my hard disk to a 40 GB size ... who makes solid, reliable ones? Maxtor? Seagate? Western Digital? Which one is the best?

Just pick one. Every batch is different and brand's reputations rise and fall over time. By the time we know if a model is good or bad, its practically obsolete. I would avoid IBM though because they're had problems recently and I think they just sold their drive unit off. I'd avoid Samsug too since they've never had the greatest reputation. Of Maxtor, Seagate, WD, just close your eyes and pick one. Its doesn't matter as long as you backup your data.

Seagate makes the best, but they are pricey.
Western Digital makes AWESOME HD's and they are reasonably priced.
Maxtors are more bottom of the line. Not as reliable as the WD or the SG.

Just my 2 cents from my experiences.

IBM 120GXP Deskstar

http://www.newegg.com/app/specificat...tem=22-145-018

they have it on newegg for $72, pricewatch.com might save you a few bucks more. also if you are looking for space and dont care for speed, i think fry's still has the WD 120gb 5400rpm drive for about 109.

The 60GXP's were the ones that had drive failures, the 120GXP's that came are much better. This is also from my experience too.

these are the ones that i have had go bad
3 x WD's - 2 x 4.3gb, 1 x 45gb (came with a hp pc)
1 Quantum (owned by Maxtor now) - 30gb

also when i sent in my 4.3gb's, i got back 4.3gb's and this was when 15-20 was the smallest you could get. when i sent in my Quantum, i got back a 40gb Maxtor drive. i know 10gb's isnt alot, but it was something. i currently have 2 x IBM 60gxp's and i havent had a problem with them yet, had them close to a year now.
