What laptop/notebook to pick?
Well I'm looking for a laptop to use at school, something that can run ProEngineer and AutoCAD at least, typically requiring 1gb of ram...but I have no clue about laptops aside from the dell 700m is what I most commonly see.
I want something wide screen, I want something that isn't too heavy, but manageable, and something that isn't too large.
I've had ideas of either the 700m or the 6000 (both dells), does anyone else have any other suggestions? Also, they both run at about 1100 after tax and with the discounts.

Dell is garbage. Since you need it for engineering purposes, go with something that will offer you EXCEPTIONAL technical support. Dell is a pain in the ass, I know from experience. I would check out HP, and Toshiba.
Macs are OK, but 3d model rendering (from what I've heard) isn't better on a Mac. I would say stick to a PC. A lot of the guys on here are hardcore Mac fans for some odd reason, so take their opinion with a grain of salt.

Well, I ended up purchasing a 700M at about 925 bucks, with 40gb hd, a/b/g wireless card, 1 yr limtied warranty, 256 1 dimm slot.
Will most likely add another gb of ram and a BT receiver card.
I figure it would be go for mobile work, and when on campus I can just plug my laptop into a monitor and the screen issue solved. It seems like a sound system from what I've heard.

For the price I was lookin to spend, the 700M had the best offer, the video card is none upgradeable so I was stuck with that. It looks like uping the ram will be my savior, and I don't particularly prefer the Dell either, it just fit costs. I bought a axim from them with gps bluetooth receiver, which broke about 2 months after using, and they are not standing behind their product and trying to resolve the issue, that is a whole nother story...

756mb ram (i got a 100 concession coupon from them)

8cell battery (runs 5hrs)

have no regrets about it.. i take it everywhere

I had a Athlon XP 3000 desktop for a couple years and I have had a Dell 700m laptop for about 6 months. 3 months ago my desktop died and I have used the 700m as a replacement - I have never felt a need to fix my desktop because this laptop does EVERYTHING i want and is fast. It is a great machine, and if you hook it up to a Dell Widescreen LCD monitor, it is gorgeous.
