Weird internet problem on my computer
Weird internet problem on my computer
I use the latest Firefox. A few days ago, I can't get into yahoo.com. It'll just say "waiting for yahoo.com to respond" down at the bottom. I opened IE7 and nothing.
Then I try to Google search via Firefox. I can go to google.com but the searches won't work. It'll just sit there. I go to IE7 and google search works.
Then I google search yahoo sports and I get in no problem. I log into my fantasy league. I'll go in check Monday, then Tuesday, but then I'll click Wednesday (for example) and the link doesn't work. No response. Then I open another tab and go to espn.com for example, and it works fine. Some other sites like careerbuilder don't work neither.
I ran a virus seach through norton and uncovered 62 virii. I quarantined all but 4. Now I ran it last night so when I woke up this morning, it was done. I tried going into yahoo (haven't restarted PC yet as I was leaving for work) and it still didn't work. I'll check again but methinks it won't work. I did run adaware and spybot last week but it still worked. I even recovered with Spybot and restored my last session to no avail before I ran Norton. The virii were either Downloader or Trojan.vundo.

I'm still amazed at the fact that there are people that think they don't need anti-virus software even if they surf the web and exchange files with other people.

Umm because it won't let me quarantine them.
I'd uninstall FF but the issue occurs with IE also. And I'm trying to visit yahoo not pr0n. Plus my wife is on Myspace, perezhilton, and facebook all day.

Thanks for the ideas guys. Hopefully google will work so I can d/l them. What do you guys think about doing a system restore to last week before it occurred?
restart your computer hit f8 until the screen pops up select "safe mode with networking". after the computer boots, open up IE and
"trend micro virus scan" once your on the site go and select the free online virus scan let it do its thing then quarantine the damn virus's...

OK I did ^ and it didn't work. The good news is that I did quarantine everything. However here's a clue. While in safe mode when the virus scan was running, I opened another tab and yahoo.com worked perfectly. So now I'm thinking one of the spyware softwares might be blocking something but like I stated earlier, I can do the workaround through google and eventually the links stop working. Once again, it's not isolated to just FF or IE so it seems it's not a browser issue. Do you think uninstalling Spybot and/or AdAware might work? What about my original idea of restoring to last week?
Try Hitman Pro.
It installs, updates and runs a bunch of spyware scanners like Ad-aware, Spybot Search and Destroy, Spyware Blaster, etc.
It will give you a final compiled report when it is done.

I have 2 profiles on the computer. One for me and one for my wife. I went on hers out of curiosity and the internet works perfectly on her profile. I'm really thinking this is not spyware but just some stupid setting on my profile. Ideas?
Download AVG Free here....
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/download...virus/us/frt/0
EDIT:
Open up command prompt and type in this command:
ipconfig/release (it will erase your current ip)
ipconfig/renew (it will ask your router for a new ip)

is it just ones that are opening in new windows? if so, after you click the link hit stop then refresh. it doesn't fix it but it is a work around.
also in IE7 go to: tools, internet options. click the settings for "change how webpages are displayed in tabs" and then "restore defaults".
if that doesn't work tweak the settings in that same window.

I didn't have time this weekend to work on the computer. I tried creating a new profile hoping it would go off of my wife's internet settings but it had the same problem that I did. I'll try hopefully tonight.

Download McAfee Stinger and run a scan.
have you tried Hijack This?
have you tried Hijack This?
I was going to try Hijack this but my Google didn't work. Then my wife's profile stopped working too. Then I tried to restore but at least a week ago but then the earliest restore point was only 4 days ago. So then I went into the msconfig and started unchecking a bunch of programs on startup. I only left standing 4 programs that I know I use. After a slight delay yahoo seemed to work again. I was all over that bitch clicking through my fantasy league, clicking on scores that usually would nullify the temporary access, and all seemed to work fine. That means it appears (I will check when I go home) something at start up was screwing up my internet. Maybe it was spyware or a program that was installed that went corrupt.
