vista on my old pc
I have been getting messages that chrome or firefox will not be supported on the vista platform. What do i need to do besides using IE? This pc is about 7-8 years old and still works fine.

To be completely honest, I don't know jack about today's PC's as I use a Mac. My comment about 10 was a joke about the bombardment of "UPGRADE NOW" pop ups that was annoying Windows 8 users. Sorry for not being any help on that front.
As for your problem, how big of an issue is it if Chrome doesn't update? (I personally recommend ditching Firefox even though I was a past user.) The reason I ask is because my job requires me to program on the XP operating system. When I use Chrome on the work PCs I get messages about not being able to update, but I have never had a problem using the software. It's not that you CAN'T use it, it's that some future features may not be backwards compatible. I don't see the need to spend money until you experience a shortcoming with the software.

You can upgrade to Windows 7 Home from Amazon for $75 and professional for $100, and your hardware *should* handle it fine. 10 may be too much depending on what your system has.

Microsoft is dropping support for Vista on April 11th, 2017. So you
Don't upgrade to 10. You'd have to pay for it, if you had a Windows 7 license lying around you could install 10 for free. You can't upgrade from Vista to 10 you'd have to delete everything and install 10 and add your data back.

Since free Windows 10 upgrade was only offered to Windows 7, 8.0, and 8.1 users, those on Vista never would have gotten the nag pop-up.

I would at least upgrade to Windows 7 if you can. It has an extended support date until January 14, 2020.
