Update now or wait for 4G?

I'm due for an update, currently using the original Moto Droid. I had my Droid since launch day and like it a lot. Lately I feel it's been getting a little laggy.

I'm due for an update, but Verizon is supposed to be launching 4G in January. I've even heard rumors that the iPhone 4 may finally be coming to Verizon with the launch of 4G.

Is 4G worth waiting for? Are their any additional fees involved for the 4G network?

If I were to update now, it would probably be the Droid X.

Personally, even if Verizon does get 4G in January, the first 4G phones will still have to deal with battery life like the Evo and Epic 4G are dealing with now. While its a great feature to have, you're kinda limited on using it due to battery life sucking. I think it'll take about 2 generations of phones before battery consumption catches up with 4G so probably a year from now. Then you have the issue about coverage. 4G will be available only to certain areas at the moment and rumors are flying around that Verizon will be going to tiered data plans in the future which will probably coincide with their 4G launch. Putting that all together, 4G doesn't sound as appealing.

The best thing to do is to root your Droid and run custom ROMs. You can overclock your Droid to Droid 2 speeds and get all the bells and whistles as the new Droids. With that said, rooting isn't for everyone and the Droid X is a pretty good phone.
