My friend owns that exact Samsung tv... it's really nice.
I've seen better picture quality, but it usually costs more. Plus, it's huge.

1080i and 720p are compareable ... both exceed in certain areas ... but overall the difference is minimal.
1080i is more lines, but interlaced. Meaning the odd lines are displayed first, then the even lines are filled in. The picture is more likely to appear jagged, however in most instances, is not noticeable.
720p is less lines, but progressive... the whole frame is displayed at once from top to bottom. With progressive, the picture is displayed similar to film. It will appear smoother than 1080i, however, because 1080i is higher resolution... the difference is negligable.
1080i and 720p are essentially the same thing to your eye. Only in small cases will you be able to tell the difference.
1080p is a moot point. They are/will be super expensive, but more significantly NOBODY IS PRODUCING 1080P CONTENT.
If you have a 1080p set, what your viewing will be scaled up to 1080p, which almost negates the point.
To clarify what Lung Fu said about scaling to 720p. He did not mean to infer that 720p is bad... if that is what your viewing natively.
What is not great is images being scaled UP to 720p, from 480p or whatever. IMO, most content scaled by hardware looks horrible. The only time content can be scaled up and improve, IMO, is when done in the editing room.

As for LCoS... right now its still vaporware. We've been talking about it for years here... yet it remains expensive and there are not many sets using it. Meanwhile, more and more manufacturers are pulling out of making LCoS.
Quite likely, you will see even fewer LCoS sets next year... however... LCoS seems to be doing well in the professional front projection market.

Too bad Intel backed out of manufacturing LCoS chips. That would have made these TV's plentlyful and cheaper.

Another question to all of you having these 16X9 TVs.
If I get the Samsung DPL or the Mitsu suggested, will I have regular, non-HDTV look weired if I were to fill the whole display? You know when the pic looks like it's pulled from the sides and the proportions are wrong. What's the deal with that?

I always use one of these.
If you go with a true 4:3 image “FULL mode” and bars on the side you run the risk of burn in.
The most popular one I use crops a small amount from the top and bottom of the picture and then it “rolls” the sides to fill the 16:9 width.

Like soopa said there really is very little difference, but it is my understanding that 720p is better for sports and that is why ESPN and ABC (monday night football, etc...) use that.
And since all HDTV tv's can use both 1080i and 720p it should not really be an issue.

To expand on what Shawn just said, the Mitsubishi has 2 modes for HD contnet and 6 modes for 480i/480p content which shows it in the original format with black bars on the side or zooms and/or expands the picture.

Well if it zooms then you lose some of the image and if it stretches you have a slightly distorted image. There are even modes that combine both stretch and zoom, Mitsubishi calls this Stretch Plus. Or you always have the option of watching it in 4:3 format and having the black or gray bars on both sides of the image.
But you really don't have a choice because you are going to be getting a 16:9 TV, unless you get one of the few 4:3 TV's. And most future content will be in 16:9 format.
