Sprint may get Treo 700P
Sprint may get Treo 700P
I for one would take this over the 700W. It keeps the 320x320 high-res screen and adds the latest version of Palm (Garnet 5.4.9), EV-DO, 1.3MP camera, and a 312MHz processor as the key updates. If this comes out for Sprint, I will be in line for one.

Palm Treo 700p looking legit

Posted Feb 4th 2006 11:41AM by Peter Rojas
Skeptics still abound, but Treo hacker extraordinaire Shadowmite is vouching for the authenticity of those Treo 700p pics that popped up yesterday evening; this dude's rep alone is enough to have most Treo fanatics convinced that this is the real deal. Anyway, we're still waiting for a few new choice pics, but in the meantime in some specs are making the rounds, and the new Treo 700p, which will supposedly be available from Sprint in April, will have a 312MHz processor, Palm OS 5.4.9, EV-DO, 1.3 megapixel digital camera, a 320 x 320 pixel display, and Bluetooth (they're not sure whether it's Bluetooth 1.2 or not). The news that Palm is busting out a new Treo running on the Palm OS has to be good news to all the loyalists who were dreading having to switch to Windows Mobile to get 3G on a Treo, but, man, Palm is really running Garnet into the ground, aren't they? Let's hope they managed to work out a lot of the stability issues that have plagued the Treo 650 before they release this one.

There will always be something bigger and better...I'll only be sad if this address the few annoyances I have with my phone.
Why don't they keep the Windows Mobile OS?
I was waiting for the 700w until I realized it is Verizon-only and not coming soon in Canada.
I decided to keep my old T310 and bought a separate PDA Dell Axim X30 Wi-fi on ebay.
I guess that smartphones are not up to maturity yet, so I'll wait 2 yrs.

geez... they are already talking about a Treo 800p... see below.
http://blog.treonauts.com/
This particular Treo 700p is branded for Sprint and as such is a CDMA smartphone which is great news for Sprint subscribers but sadly means that there is still no clue of a next generation GSM Treo… According to previous rumours (below) of new Treo releases in 2006, the first GSM Treo is likely going to be offered by Cingular in the US and other carriers in Europe around April/May while a Treo 700p GSM version will have to wait until September.
1. January 2006: Treo 700w (WM 5.0, EV-DO) currently available exclusively from Verizon (CDMA) until June 2006 and from other carriers (CDMA & GSM) thereafter
2. March-April 2006: Treo 700p (Palm OS, EV-DO) exclusively from Sprint (CDMA) for 6 months and from other carriers (CDMA & GSM) thereafter
3. April-May 2006: "Hollywood" - rumoured to be called Treo 800p is expected to be offered primarily by Orange and/or Vodafone in Europe and in US likely to be launched by Cingular
4. April-May 2006: "Lowrider" - a sub-$300 device and entry-level smartphone, compatible to previous-generation network radios (like those found on the current Treo 650)

Palm Reveals Treo 700p Smartphone
May 15, 2006
By: Christopher Meinck
Palm has officially announced the forthcoming release of the Palm Treo 700p. The new Treo 700p will offer broadbandlike speeds using EVDO and will be available through both Sprint and Verizon Wireless.
First Palm OS Based Treo Smartphone on EvDO
Adding a fast data connection to the already efficient Palm OS platform speeds email, messaging and large attachment downloads, and dramatically enhances web browsing. The speed of EvDO also allows for an enjoyable experience when streaming multimedia content, and the Treo 700p smartphone ships with Palm’s first built-in streaming application. The Treo 700p streams mobile content, such as live TV, movie clips and audio from radio stations, as well as training videos or company communications.
Additional Memory
The Palm OS based Treo 700p smartphone includes 128MB of memory (60MB user available). By using SD memory cards, currently available with 2GB of storage (sold separately), in addition to the 60MB of dedicated user storage, users have plenty of room to download and carry important documents and multimedia content.
Other Treo 700p Features and Benefits
* Superior phone functionality, including personalized ring tones for various categories of callers and the ability to ignore a call with text messaging;
* New voice-memo application, which can be used to create custom ring tones, add voice annotations to photos or simply record a memo;
* Enhanced email and messaging, including better Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 ActiveSync support, which now includes contact sync in addition to email and calendar, as well as threaded SMS/MMS messages in a single chat view and out-of-the-box support for Yahoo!, AOL, and Gmail;
* Smarter, faster web browsing using a new and improved version of the award-winning Blazer browser;
* Full PDF support using DataViz Documents To Go Version 8.0, which also offers native support for Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint; and
* The fast, friendly and familiar Palm OS platform, Version 5.4.9.

Not to mention Palm OS is dead, lol. Next versions will be based on Linux kernel. Then it will be cool. For now it's soo old and antiquated.
It doesn't multitask, single threaded, doesn't handle 3rd party apps well...
And yes, I have owned the following Palm Phones.
i300
i330
i500
treo 600
treo 650
What I can do on my PPC phone out of the box is insane comapred to what the palm could only dream of.
Example:
Streaming live TV from Orb to my phone from my cable box at home
streaming my MP3's to my phone
A good WWW browser, the blazer browser SUCKS
I run Opera on my PPC, it has tabs, java support
truly being able to multitask
Pocket Word, Pocket excell, pocket powerpoint
... I could keep going.
Palm was designed for non power users and simplicty of design. In comparison.
Palm OS = Windows 3.1
Windows CE= Windows XP
ps. this thread is in response to the people trashing Widows CE.

And Siggy will never learn.
For some of us Windows Mobile is USELESS.
1) I use a mac
2) Again...I use palm specific programs in my industry that have no other equivalent on any other handheld OS. So, I stick with Palm. It does what it needs to do to get the job done.

(btw, I love .... love my 700W)
Is there a big difference between the 650 and the 700 to justify the extra $150 and what are they? I was originally gong to get a Nextel Blackberry, but I seem to be leaning towards the Treo 650.
Any info or recomendations will be appreciated.

...it's kinda like PC=700w and Mac=650... I've always liked Pocket PCs, bought a Palm Pilot once and returned it after 3 days... but that's just me...

Are those added/upgraded features worth an extra $150? Only you can answer that question.

I'm trying to find where price is talked about.

I bought my treo 700p yesterday and am pumped. This is the first PDA phone I get and I am loving it! I am such a
so I'll definitely come in here on occassion to get some info from you phone jocks!Oh and I still paid up the wazoo for those that are interested but with the instant rebate, 2-year credit I have for being a Sprint customer, and the price back down to $650 (from 680) it was somewhat palpable. Sprint will also give me $35 for my VGA1000 which is a pretty old phone (I've had it for about 2.5 years and I don't believe they even sell it anymore). In the end it will have come out to less than $400 including taxes.
