Sprint launches Nationwide PTT service

Sprint Launches Nationwide Two-Way Walkie-Talkie Style Service to Provide Customers with a Quick Way to Communicate One-on-One or in Groups

Monday November 17, 6:03 am ET

PCS Ready Link(SM) Allows Co-Workers, Family and Friends to Connect With Push of a Button on Two New PCS Vision(SM) Ready Link Phones by Sanyo Anywhere on the Enhanced Sprint Nationwide PCS Network

OVERLAND PARK, Kan., Nov. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Sprint (NYSE: FON - News, PCS - News) announced the availability of a new nationwide walkie-talkie style service called PCS Ready Link(SM) that gives customers a quick, convenient way to communicate one-on-one or to groups of people with the simple push of a button. Ideal for short "get in, get out" conversations, PCS Ready Link is an efficient and cost-effective way to quickly access co-workers, clients, suppliers, family and friends anywhere on the enhanced Sprint Nationwide PCS Network. The new service makes its debut on two new PCS Vision(SM) Ready Link Phones by Sanyo, including a ruggedized version and a clamshell design.

"Sprint is focused on being a leader and innovator of advanced products and services that are customer-friendly, easy to use and work the same nationwide," said Len Lauer, president and chief operating officer of Sprint Corp. "PCS Ready Link is designed to meet the needs of customers who want a quick, cost-effective way to share information, check status and alert others. The new walkie-talkie style service complements a comprehensive suite of Sprint wireless products and services that help our customers stay connected, productive, informed and entertained anywhere on the most advanced and complete wireless network in the country."

Bringing Innovation to the Two-Way Radio Market

An established leader in handset and wireless services innovation, Sprint has partnered with Sanyo to once again raise the bar in handset design and usability. Customers who want to take advantage of PCS Ready Link will be able to choose from two new full-color screen handsets by Sanyo, both with built-in speakerphones and full PCS Vision capabilities including the ability to browse the Internet, access to downloadable games, ringers, screensavers and other Java-based applications, and a full suite of messaging services including access to personal and corporate e-mail via PCS Business Connection. The PCS Vision Ready Link Phone RL2000 by Sanyo is dual-mode with a blue and black ruggedized, bar-style design to minimize wear and tear from heavy use. The PCS Vision Ready Link Phone RL2500 by Sanyo is dual-mode/tri-mode with a silver clamshell flip design.

Both phones have a suggested retail price of $299.99 with special rebate offers of up to $150 depending on the service agreement. Sprint expects to offer a third handset that combines the new PCS Ready Link service with enhanced picture capabilities later this quarter.

Simplifying the Customer Experience with Convenient, Easy-To-Use Features

PCS Ready Link also offers several customer-friendly and easy-to-use calling features. For example, PCS Ready Link customers use the same phone number for voice and PCS Ready Link calls, which means users have only one number to remember for both types of calls. Additionally, customers can easily manage their PCS Ready Link personal directories and group lists directly from their handsets or via the Web at www.readylink.sprintpcs.com. Contact lists created by users from the Web-based tool are updated over the air to the user's phone. Company administrators also have the ability to maintain a separate company directory on their employees' handsets. Administrators can update their company directories and group lists and push changes to the phones of their employees via a Web-based administration portal.

Keeping Customers Connected with Expansive Nationwide Coverage

Customers can use PCS Ready Link to make one-to-one or group calls (up to five people) anywhere on the enhanced Sprint Nationwide PCS Network, which covers more than 240 million people. When not on the enhanced Sprint Nationwide PCS Network, PCS Ready Link customers can still make regular voice calls on their PCS Ready Link Phone in areas where Sprint has analog roaming agreements in place. Sprint customers with PCS Free & Clear America service plans can take advantage of this expanded calling area and make voice calls in more places than any other carrier without incurring additional roaming charges.

"While many of our business customers have been asking for a two-way radio communication service to complement their existing wireless voice services, we also believe PCS Ready Link will appeal to consumers," said Lauer. "For businesses, PCS Ready Link provides another tool to enhance productivity for mobile workers. For consumers, it's a form of verbal instant messaging for families and friends to stay connected. Customers in both segments seeking a wireless service with two-way radio functionality now have an option from Sprint that doesn't require them to make compromises on the feature functionality and battery life of their handsets or network coverage."

The new service is an affordable way to share information and stay in touch, particularly when combined with feature plans such as PCS-to-PCS calling. Whether you are shopping with a friend this holiday season, wanting to stay in touch with distant loved ones or trying to coordinate family schedules, PCS Ready Link can keep you connected, increase your efficiency and keep you on budget without using up your voice minutes.

Sprint has been conducting PCS Ready Link trials with several companies that have a need for quick communication among groups of employees to be productive and effective. This includes companies with large mobile sales forces, technicians and work groups in industries such as manufacturing, construction, delivery, transportation, healthcare, financial services and insurance. Because both PCS Ready Link Phones are equipped with PCS Vision and roaming capabilities, small-, medium- and large-sized businesses can take advantage of the suite of PCS Clear Wireless Workplace solutions.

"Sprint has been a great partner for Cardinal Freight Carriers in providing a range of telecommunication services that allow us to effectively compete in an increasingly challenging marketplace," said Clay Holmes, vice president of IT and engineering for Cardinal Freight Carriers, Inc. "With PCS Ready Link, our supervisors and drivers have a simple way to quickly communicate delivery requirements as they change hour to hour and, sometimes, minute to minute."

Sprint customers who purchase a new PCS Vision Ready Link Phone have a couple of pricing options. Price plans are $15 per month with unlimited PCS Vision, and an additional $5 per month if they would like to sign up for unlimited PCS Ready Link service. Customers can also select a plan with only unlimited PCS Ready Link service for a flat fee of $15 per month. The unlimited PCS Ready Link calls included in the flat monthly fee applies to one-to-one calls, as well as group calls. Customers will also receive PCS Vision and PCS Ready Link free for two months as part of a promotional offer.

Sprint will be conducting live demonstrations of PCS Ready Link at Comdex in Las Vegas on Nov. 17 - 20, 2003, at booth number 11064. For more information or to sign up for PCS Ready Link, customers can go to Sprint Stores, contact their Sprint business sales representative, call business telesales toll-free at 1-877-459-8166 or go to www.sprintpcs.com. The new service will also be available through indirect business channels including the PCS Business Solutions Program.

Sprint's timing is perfect. Verizon showed early and they took a beating for not having a comparable offering to Nextel. All the Nextel commercials took aim at Verizon, not Sprint.

Ready Link is superior to the Verizon offering. We did things right the first time instead of throwing something out there before it was ready. You'll start to see the comparisons, the results will be conclusive.

Network error, please re login, message notification four hours later or you just can't get to the right screen for shortmail.

I try to use it but I would say it works about 30% of the time.

So frustrating!!!!!!!

ya, Verizon dropped the ball on the PTT.

Not many folks who use PTT want a flimsey phones. They are going to toss the thing around and beat up on it. At least all of the folks that I know who use PTT.

Mainly construction. Their phones get trashed.

So now we have a third party in the PTT family. No biggie. I'm waiting for the day when you'll be able to PTT with anyone through different networks. Now that will be something.

FYI, ATT will have their PTT available pretty soon.

BTW, Shortmail? Maybe it's being replaced by something else. Maybe not.

Sorry to disappoint you NSXNEXT, I'm here, just tied up in meetings in Kansas City (hmmm ...) all week.

This was one of your funnier posts Ken. But by no means your best. Have you ever gotten on one of those director level + calls that sprint has where they don't feed you the marketing BS? For a while I thought Siggy found a way to listen to them, but it seems like he's gotten the corporate bug now that's he's somehow mysteriously linked to vision.

At any rate, Sprint's timing is perfect, in your opinion ... or that of the company release you've read. They are 3 months behind Verizon, and 10 years behind Nextel. Both Verizon & Sprint are 12 million PTT customers behind Nextel... Sprint

Nextel aimed the commercials at who their competition was at the time. Why acknowledge something that doesn't exist? You make no sense, you wanted them to bring attention to the Sprint offering that wasn't yet available in an attempt to preempt the launch? What marketing classes did you fail getting your MBA?

Your "favourite" part is the only advantage, which will prove insignificant in the end, since handsets are obviously NOT making a difference in the success of Sprint's traditional voice business.

The Verizon offering does allow you to manipulate the PTT Phonebook from the handset and on the web. I remember you saying you couldn't find a way, well, I thought you were a handset guy?

Pricing is a wash right now, they are basically the same, and we'll see where it settles after the launch.

Were those your two big points?

Here I'll give you two big points why Verizon's PTT is better than Sprints (and incidentally Nextel)

1. Presence Messaging - You know before you try to PTT somebody if they are online. Verizon offers this, nobody else does.

2. Nationwide Group Calling - Verizon lets you have groups up to 20. Sprint only offers up to 5, Nextel does not allow nationwide group calls.

I'm busy for the rest of the day, but I'll clear up any additional propaganda when I go by my room tonight.

Let me know what you guys are doing tonight, I'm of course in town, maybe you'll show me a demo of this new service ('cause I haven't seen it already )

you won't see any worthwhile video services for a while. it's a stretch even for EVDO. It will probably be five years before you see anything like this wirelessly. you'll see gimmicky services pop up here and there, but they will die as quickly as the popped up. consumers are starting to demand quality now with all the competition.

personally, i can't stand highly compressed, grainy video, and crappy audio. this is perhaps Shawn S's fault because he got me all ramped up about home & video and I can't watch anything unless it is a DVD or on HD now.

Nextel - verizon i say are on same level, you say verizon is good cause you see who is online, its the quality thats the issue. I havent heard anything about that.

Spring < everyone I just hate sprint, they have great phones, but that only counts if you can use it. Horrible service everywhere i've been with it.

5 years? The world's gonna end by then heh

What would be considered a good quality for cell use though? some sort of 56k streaming type of video/audio compression would work well i'm assuming... what's mobitv.com (sprint) use?

what is the bandwidth of current phone services?

good quality low resolution video at acceptable frame rates can be delivered at like 14.4kbps these days.

WTF is that suppose to mean?

because you like when we have topics we agree on?

You dont like me because of the other technical conversation. hehe. we'll contine that tomorrow at lunch.

Anyway, truth is verzion dropped the ball. #1 use of PTT is for people who need rugged phones. Not the dainty things verizon is trying to push. Gotta hit the market nich before you try and sell the here and there customers.

i just PMed you and ken my cell -- call me anytime.

had nothing to do with the technical discussion. i had to put writing my explanation to you on hold for the week, but i will finish it soon and post it up for your ... comments ... anyways, i do like you, i think you have very pretty eyes.

i just PMed you and ken my cell -- call me anytime.
KK, lol, we can discuss it in person. No need to post it on here. I think maybe 2-3 people actually care to read our crap.

yes that is possible. but given that screens are now delivering 262,000 colors on cell phones, at a high resolution... who wants high frame rate with low res?

i remember back when quake II came out and people were running rediculous resolutions to get super high frame rates. well as you know, you have to find a happy medium for both.

i probably won't be happy unless it is like HD (1080, 30 frames/sec, 5.1 surround).

Verizon 3G 1X-EVDO can burst into the 2 megabit range.

Verizon & Sprint 3G 1X-RTT can burst into the 144 kilobit range.

ATT/Cingular/Tmobile GPRS can burst to the 80 kilobit range.

Hater. 4 months later, we have two phones (instead of one) AND better PTT network? It means we were working on PTT long before you were...

Prepare to be wowed at lunch tomorrow. If you are, be honest and post here.

just out of curiosity.. how much extra per month are the current PTT services that verizon and sprint are pitching?

my nationwide 10,000 for nextel breakdown:

1,000 daytime
4,000 night and weekend
5,000 direct connect.
$54.99

walk-in express
$2.50

unlimited internet
$10.00

so far, i think i will be extending my contract with nextel for another year because it seems to have the most reliable and delay-free PTT service.

p.s. i still prefer terrestrial based networks over the voice over ip system that verizon is using.

NOPE……..I’ve got no way to receive it yet.

Too many trees for DISH.
Too far from a tower for “Over the air”.
Not enough bandwidth for cable.

One of the drawbacks of living in the “boonies”.

Free for two months. Otherwise a $10/month add, unlimited, nationwide. But don't quote me.

network is the same. actually you guys have less of an PTT infrastructure than verizon.

i've seen it, it's pretty much the same, except for the exceptions that i've noted.

sprint was working on PTT for several years before verizon. but you guys hurried you're launch for SOME reason

Too bad Sprint's network still sucks donkey balls. I took a little road trip with my gf this weekend and her Sprint phone was searching for service 1/2 the time while my Verizon phone was always on network.
