Sony: Tablet S and P News and Discussion Thread
I'm pretty sure the screen would rotate accordingly to whether you're holding it with your right hand or left hand. It's actually kinda cool in a way that when laid on a flat surface, the screen is angled for better viewing (vs facing straight up to the ceiling). I know this because my (very) old Gateway tablet/laptop has a thicker side due to the battery... and the angle it creates acts the same.
A smarter idea would have been to put feet on them, like on a keyboard, that you can flip out to prop up when needed and fold back down when not needed.
The wedge shape is a good idea when using the tablet on a flat surface and in landscape view. But if it's in portrait view on a flat surface, it's going to tilt up to one side which will make viewing awkward.

If anything, it's different. The biggest thing I'm miffed about is the vulnerability to scratches that I'm reading...that's not good.

still don't agree... I think the wedge is actually a good design. Yes, there are a lot of tablets with bragging rights about their thinness, but IMO there are things in life where too thin isn't always good. Yes, a big flat screen TV on your wall being thin is nice and sleek... but when it comes to things that are held or be handled you should be able to have a good grip. I've played with some of these tablets at electronic stores and if anything is awkward, holding something so thin while making sure you have a good grip (so that you don't drop it) is awkward (to me anyways). Being thinner isn't always better. Think of something like a baseball bat or bicycle handles... or perhaps a door nob. If those things are super thin or tiny, it actually makes it harder to handle, thus less practical. You say it's awkward with it laying flat while viewing in portrait? Seriously, if you think about it... are these tablets meant to be used while laying flat? It's something you hold... like a book. How often do you (or we... as in people in general) read the book with it completely flat on the table?

Yes it'll be nice on a flat surface cause of the angle. And when gripped on your one hand. If your hand gets tired or just feel like switching hands, just try gripping the thin edge. You gotta rotate it.
Anyways if you place it flat on any surface, stomach, lap, bed. If it's in portrait it'll tilt cause of the wedge shape.
There are pros and cons to each IMO.
All I'm saying that with the shape of the wedge, the thin side is supposedly thinner than the samsung galaxy tab 10.1. So say you're holding the thick side with your left hand and say you want to use your right hand to hold the device, you're not gonna get a good grip like you say on the thin side with the fat/heavier side hanging in the air so you're gonna have to rotate it everytime you switch hands.
Anyways I'd actually have to feel it in my hands to make real judgment on the wedge design anyways...
Also no gorilla glass for the touch screen.
Plastic makes it very scratch/fingerprint prone.
Can't play media directly from the SD card you just inserted.
Flimsy cover for the SD slot
Same $499/$599 price as other tablets..

I'll wait to make real judgement based on final hardware and software reviews.
The engadget review says it's based off final hardware design, but software is unfinished.

If there wasn't a table, then the book was on my lap. Flat.
I hold my kindle and books in my hand if I am in a chair away from the table. Same with my touchpad. If I am sitting at the table, the book, kindle, or touchpad is laying on the table.
so held one of these at bestbuy for a good 15 minutes.
the wedge shape is nice to hold when one handed, but if i want to switch hands, the thin side is a bit harder to get a good grip, but possible.
also i dont know if it was a setting, but the screen doesnt auto rotate or rotate at all if you hold it with the thick side of the wedge facing down.
i couldnt try it laying flat on the table because of that huge half egg shaped thing that worstbuy puts on their tablets to prevent stealing.
the plastic door for the SD slot is a piece of junk. the one i fiddled with was already broken.
the feel of the materials did feel a bit cheapish to me, i guess im used to like the xoom/galaxytab/transformer/ipad with their metal bodies.
still not a fan of honeycomb.

They had these at the Sony store on the studio lot yesterday. I went there on my lunch break to look around and played with one for a few minutes.
Honestly, my opinion is these are junk. The interface is non-intuitive, its SLOW, swipes and gestures are followed by laggy responses. The wedge shape is whatever...it makes it feel unnecessarily bulky, and the plastic in the design makes it feel cheap.
I was just very unimpressed...where as I figured this thing might at least perform well....nope.

Tried it out yesterday extensively. I actually really like it and the slowness and poorly designed interface was not apparent to me.
It was faster than my wife's TouchPad IMO...and I really liked how slick the GUI felt. Nicely done.
The exterior is another story. I'm still not entirely sold on how it feels somewhat plastic. I will see what the dual-screen P model is like when it sells and then, well...likely buy one of them with the tech allowance I have when the new year hits.

Um...when I tilt my iPhone and iPad from landscape to portrait...its instant...
When I tried it with the Sony...I though it was busted...then it FINALLY switched over.
Swiping pages...apple = instant, Sony = LAAAAAAG
Apple = intuitive, Sony = wtf was I looking at
Yeah...apple sucks.

Ok I played with one for a few minutes today. I agree with the cheap feeling sentiment shared by everyone but yumcha. I tried to find the browser but couldn't find it so I played crashed bandicoot for a couple minutes, unimpressed and yeah hitting the trigger buttons and any other button at the same time is going to be difficult. I found nothing that makes it stand out from the rest of the honeycomb clones and no reason to choose that over an iPad at the same price point. iPad has too much going for it for a logical person not driven by hate of a certain brand to choose it over the competition. Things may change when windows 8 drops but no compelling reason right now...
