VNC if you can configure a firewall and know what dynamic dns is.

Gotomypc (not free) if you don't want to configure a firewall.

And there is this free gotomypc competitor.

Ask your network administrator

None of these products work if your PC is behind a firewall. Usually you would use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection to your job's network and then you could use PCAnywhere, VNC, or even Remote Desktop to connect to your work PC.

What OS are you using at home? Where are connecting from? What type of Router do you have? What is your Social Security Number and Savings Account Number? ASL?

This statement is not fully correct. Gotomypc and logmein work with no firewall modifcation, provided that the admin hasn't specifically blocked the sites those products access. The admin would have had to have gone out of his way to block those products.

Do they run over port 80?

No enterprise worth it's salt would leave unused ports opened on their firewall.

The host at work makes an outbound call on port 80 to gotomypc servers. So does the client.

Q Which port numbers does GoToMyPC Corporate use, and can I change the port numbers?
A GoToMyPC Corporate uses one of the several ports that are typically left open so that users can access the Internet (port 80 or 443). This means that you generally do not need to configure firewalls to allow GoToMyPC Corporate connections. If your organization uses a proxy that restricts traffic through port 80 or 443, you may open port 8200 for GoToMyPC Corporate connections. Citrix Online provides a Connectivity Test Wizard that you may use to optimize your GoToMyPC Corporate connection ports.

Depends if they travel over commonly used ports such as 80....

That's how they own Secuity admins....Can't very well block 80.....But if it's not a direct link to the home PC (IE, to a central network), then you can.

The entire GotomyPCFAQ is here if you are interested.

Attempting to block this is like attempting to block AIM.

Firstly, the original poster wants to access their WORK pc remotely. You are right port 80 is not blocked for OUTGOING traffic. So in order for this "solution" his enterprise would have to be running GTMPC Server which is not an enterprise level solution IMHO. Otherwise your comments are spot on.

Our company uses GoToMyPC and our firewall is pretty stout, works really good so far.

Ok so if your router can handle VPN I would go with a VPN/Remote Desktop solution because its faster than gotomypc.

If you don't have VPN and if you are comfortable with your firewall you can open up a port and allow VNC or Remote Desktop to your machine. This is the least secure solution and I don't really recommend it. I use VNC for my home connection because there isn't really anything worth stealing on my home machine except pron.

Otherwise use gotomypc or logmein. The only problem I've seen with gotomypc is that is can be slow at times. I have friends that use logmein and like it.

With all of the options you just leave the machine turned on and authenticate to it with a password. Make sure you have a strong password.

No - you assign a password that is needed to connect. Make sure your PC doesn't go into sleep or hibernate mode.

Doesn't XP already come with Remote Desktop? Why do you need to "buy" anything?
