That used to be necessary on old drives so that bad sectors could be found and marked as such but now drives have automatic sector relocation and it's handled on the fly by the drive. Today's drives automatically move data from a bad sector to a good sector.

Hey, I'm hoping someone here can help me.

I just recently took apart and reassembled my computer to clean out all the dust and all the hardware runs fine (hooray!)

Problem is, certain internet related things fail to work:

1. Zune won't let me play anything I downloaded using Zune pass ("Need to check usage rights. Please sign into zune" although it says I'm signed in)

2. Can't connect to Origin ("The log-in server is not responding or cannot be reached")

3. Remote Desktop connection to a cluster for school ("Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer...")

4. Hotmail won't let me sign in, just goes to the blank sign in page and never progresses to my inbox.

As you can see there is a bit of a trend here. I checked Device Manager and the ethernet adapter's drivers are okay. I power cycled both the router and modem. I turned off windows firewall (haven't touched the router's firewall). I even switched my ethernet ports just in case.

I entered
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
and I got the message: "No operation can be performed on Local Area Connect 2 while it has its media disconnected."

Any clues to what this may be? I'd like to get this figured out as soon as possible so that I can access my school cluster from my house to do some projects. Thanks for any and all help!

Open an elevated command prompt (right click on cmd and choose "run as administrator).

Type the following hitting "enter" after each line:

ipconfig /flushnds
nbtstat -R
nbtstat -RR
netsh int ip reset
netsh winsock reset

Reboot. See what you get.

I took the liberty of assuming you meant ipconfig /flushdns and not /flushnds correct?

I restarted my computer and the wired connection found an "unidentified network" and labeled it as public. I won't let me connect to the internet using that connection. The Windows Network Diagnostics states that "local area connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration.

I enabled my wireless connection and that connects the internet fine, but it has the same problem when it comes to RDC, Zune, Origin etc.

Thanks, for the help. I'll looking around the internet to see if I can find something useful.

Oops, I are dixlexic.

Sounds like the router or router settings are fubar. Might be time for a factory reset if you know how to set it up after that.

Whoa, if the router is working for other computers, then it's probably not the issue. Can your roomies get to all those sites without any problems?

Have you done a rootkit and virus scan? Updated the lan and wireless adapter drivers? What OS?

I'm not sure if my roommates can get on, I'm out of the house. I'll let you know tonight when I get back. I checked for new drivers and it said they were up to date. I haven't manually checked their website though. I did a scan with malware bytes and it returned nothing. I forgot if that scans for rootkits however.

My OS is win 7 pro (or office, whatever it's called) 64-bit. It was working fine before, now after I rebuilt it just this computer is having problems.

I think I got it all up and running!

I went into my BIOS settings and looked around a bit. I saw an option for OS controlled Plug and play. It was disabled, so I enabled it just to see if it would help. I then disabled and re-enabled my ethernet adapters. Zune and Origin can long in now. Let's hope this actually fixed it and not some sort of odd fluke.

... Turns out it was a partial fluke.

I disabled my WLAN and kept my LAN enabled and restarted my computer. It won't even connect to the router.

I enable WLAN and I can run everything internet related fine.

Looks like somehow, some way, that fixed the WLAN but LAN is still a messed up. Oh well. I think that's acceptable for tonight. I'll work on it some more tomorrow.

EDIT: To be more specific, the LAN tries to identify the network, disconnects randomly then attempts again. After about 10 minutes it finally connects but sometimes it will label it "public network" and other times by the network's actual name. Not sure if that helps anyone reading this identify the problem, but I figured I'd throw it out there.

shot in the dark but if you have access to the router, try deleting the DHCP entry for your wired LAN and then grabbing a new DHCP lease.

it could also very well be a bad cable. Seen it happen.

Try running an infinite ping in the command prompt. the command iirc is "ping -t [router address]". If it drops random packets it can be failing port on the router or the computer, or a bad cable too.

I think I actually have it fixed this time, but I'm not sure exactly how.

I went in the router and released the ipv4 address. The browser then became unresponsive and I lost internet access (I sort of expected this, but I was just trying anything). I power cycled my router, went back to my computer and it reconnected fine! I even restarted my computer (just in case it was another fluke) and it still connected okay. Hooray!

I'm not sure why that worked. Maybe it forced the router to renew all the ethernet port's IP's, which just happened to fix whatever was wrong with my connection? I don't know, I'm pulling this stuff out of thin air as I know about nothing concerning networking.

Thanks again for everyone's help. Hopefully this post won't immediately be followed by me stating it's broke again.

so, I have to reformat the 3TB drive because I was a dummy and formatted it as MBR instead of GPT. I didn't do my research, I didn't know about that difference until now. As it stands, it is only a 2TB partition, and there is 746GB unallocated space which I cannot do anything with. So yeah. First world problems.

you can always make a new partition on it if you do not want to reformat and spend time moving data around.....

No he can't. Mbr is 32 bit and it's address range only goes to 2.2tb. The extra space is unusable since mbr can't assign memory addresses to it. He needs to do a low level format and choose GPT next time.

Ok, can someone guide me with moving an iTunes library to a new computer/install of windows?

My sisters win xp computer is the crap, I want to install win 7 or 8 on it. I've already backed up her iTunes library to a external drive.

If I reformat her computer to the new OS and install iTunes. Now before I do anything, When I plug any iPhone/iPad to it, it will say this iPhone/iPad is synced with another device and must be erased of itunes content before I can sync it to the new library.

So if I want it to sync without losing any data on her iPhone/iPad, is this the proper procedure?

1. Import her iTunes library backup on the external to the new computer/install of windows
2. Disable automatic syncing of iPods/iPhones etc
3. Authorize her computer to her account.
4. Transfer purchases to iTunes.
5. Back up her iPhone to the computer (iirc you can still back up, just not sync)
6. Restore from that backup
7. Sync
8. Profit?

I did a similar process when I moved my moms iPhone to her new Mac, but she had one CD on her iPhone, so I just erased her iTunes content and ripped the CD to her Mac and synced it back to her iPhone.

Copy the Itunes Directory from the XP PC to External.
Copy the Itunes back to the new in the same place
Open Itunes on the new PC without the Iphone or Ipad connected
Let Itunes find the content or add folder to Itunes manually
Authorize her account in the store and on the PC
Make sure all music, vids, apps are in Itunes
Sync devices if you want

App data is stored on the IOS device, it stays on the IOS device unless you do a wipe, or when you delete an app and it asks you "do you want to keep app info, blah, blah" and you say delete data. Sync will keep it on it in a plist on the IOS device. Game data mostly stays in game center. Before you sync the Iphone and IPad, on Itunes on the new PC, redownload the apps she wants to keep, if she paid, they will be free on download. Contacts, Messages, Calendar, Notes and other settings are in Icloud, make sure that is backed up on each IOS device. Apple has done pretty good at making sure you can get the data back, the only thing people get stuck on usually is content not downloaded from Apple (music, movies, etc).

Today was awesome! The local Sony store is closing and almost everything is 60% off. I found a recertified Sony vaio laptop that once retailed in late 2011 for almost $2000 for only $480!!!!

Specs of this beast:
13.3in 1600x900 led
256GB SSD
Core i5 2.3
USB 3
Hdmi
Backlit keyboard
Win 7 pro
TPM CHIP
4GB DDR3
Switchable between ati 6630m graphics and intel gpu
3.6lbs .9in thick

All that for $480! And it comes with the one year warranty

Also they were selling 4gb ddr3 stick for $16 (60% off) so I bumped it up to 8gb for hella cheap.

I told my boss and I think he's going to pick one up too, the one I got was for a client but I've been playing with it all night. It's really nice, it's better than my mbp in almost every way, if I didn't need to run OS X I'd have picked one up.
