Question about two Samsung DLP models...
I am looking at the two following TV's.
5063
I know the first one has the "newer" chip. I looked at both side by side and really couldn't tell a difference. Its 700 more, I don't mind the money, but not if its not really doing anything. Also, the 5067 (not shown) is the same as the 5063 except for the built in HD tuner, what about the 5065?

Check both for the "rainbow effect". The "new chip" is supposed to mostly fix that.
Rainbow means that if you move your head while looking at the screen you will see a rainbow image on the screen. Annoying. You may be able to find a demo video via.
of what rainbow looks like.

Is there a 5065? I know there is a 5085 (the "Captain Kirk" TV). That one is the 4th generation Samsung. I think
has it?
I'm looking at the Samsungs, I'm leaning towards the 4674 when the new ones come out later this year.

Thanks, when are they releasing the new versions? I thought it was sometime in April?

Here we go:
The HLP 5063 uses the HD3 DLP chip at 0.55". This provides seamless 720p resolution with a 1500:1 contrast ratio.
The other two you mentioned use the HD2+ DLP chip at 0.8". This also provides 720p resolution, but at a higher 2500:1 contrast. The downside is that there is a bit of screen door effect with this particular chip.
The HL-R6477 also has a slower 6 segment color wheel, while the HLPs have a faster 7 segment wheel. I would imagine the rainbow effect is more readily seen with the HLR.
The HLP5063 is also 14" deep versus at least 20" deep for the other models.
The HLP5085 also comes with it's own stand (typically about $300-$400 extra).

I believe that it means that it is HD Ready but will not work with standard antennas. So, in order to get HD you need to get a cable box that has HD compatibility.
HDMI is an input similar to DVI. Very high quality, used for HD cable boxes and DVD players. It provides better picture/sound than say composite or s-video.

Most cable boxes do not come with HDMI, I just bought the 5085 a few weeks ago. Looks great btw.

But figure this...they are going to make damn sure they get new TVs out for the Thanksgiving/X-mas buying season.

They will probably similar priced, but the HLP "value" series will look better.
That said, there are HLPs powered by the higher end HD2+ chip. These are still 0.8", but offer superior contrast ratios. They might be a bit brighter as well. They'll be about $500-700 more than the HD3 powered TVs. This is the disparity between the HLP5063 and HLP5085 for example.

HDMI is the exact same as DVI except it has a few more pins for audio, and the internal transmission paths require copy protection (no unprotected digital signals allowed). That said, if you plan to use a home theatre, you'll have an optical or coax audio out and can jsut use the video segment of the HDMI (i.e. DVI with a different connector).
