Try opening up Windows Media Player and see if the device appears under the Sync tab. If so, the device is MTP-only and doesn't support behaving like a USB drive.

If your computer isn't assigning drive letters for storage devices, that sounds like a bigger problem. You could try looking in Disk Management (right click My Computer>Manage>Disk Management) and see if anything looks amiss there.

Conduit is barely a virus. If you can't figure out iTunes and how to get the external to work then I would advise you leave the reformatting to a pro.

Oh God, that will encrypt all your data, delete it, send email threats to the White House, and fund terrorists. Probably time to get a new machine and NEVER connect to the internet for more than 45 seconds at a time.

OK, DO NOT do this if you are on a XP machine, but otherwise:

There. Everyone gets one free one. Don't say you didn't.

Why not just do back to a restore point to when the computer was fine? It will not effect your data. From there, you can do an easy transfer of your data to the external and then once you reformat the machine you can just easy transfer everything back to the machine without any issues.

It shouldnt. Download Malwarebytes and run it in safe mode. Remove the viruses. Then once done, plug in the external drive, if you hear the tones that its inserted in, and do see a drive, go to drive manager and look an unassigned drive and give it a letter. If not, try different USB ports (front and back). If not, uninstall the USB controllers from device manager and reinstall them. Also make sure the external drive works on a different PC and its in fact your PC thats the issue.
