Outlook gmail receiving mail/incoming mail error

Family member has computer running Outlook 2000 SR-1.
(does not want to upgrade...long story)

Anyhow they need to use outlook (been using gmail web base forever, but need to work with outlook now)

I set up outlook for them as internet mail (not business) configured gmail for imap.

Long story short, have no issues sending email, invites...etc.

Cannot receive/inbox mail errors. Error received:

Could not fetch new headers in the inbox. An unknown error has occurred.
Please save existing work restart the program.
Restarting the program/rebooting does not solve the problem.

Checked and double checked settings....used gmails setup:
Incoming Mail (IMAP) Server - Requires SSL
imap.gmail.com
Port: 993
Requires SSL:Yes
Turned off and on windows firewall...

Any ideas?...I'm baffled.

Did you enable the imap?

1. When you say you "configured gmail for imap", you mean you went into the webmail settings and enabled imap?

2. May need to do a captcha login for a first time imap access. It varies with the provider.

3. How large is the mail file on the server? OL 2000 only supports up to 2 GB AFAIK.

yes, enabled imap in gmail settings, and setup imap setting for gmail in outlook (ports, servers...etc)

Dunno what you are speaking of....can you expand on this?

Close to 9GB of the free 10GB of gmail.
Are you saying that I'd have to delete from gmail over 6GB of email in order to be able to download the incoming mail?....not that I would do that, but Outlook 2000 is capped at only 2GB of mail data?

If there is indeed a mail file space capacity, you should be able to set the time frame that outlook downloads to say within the last year or whatever to come in under the limit.

I dunno where that setting is or even if it exists.

I did set auto archive clean out for 1 month, but that didn't change anything and the error still exists.

Why not use Windows Live Mail instead of that ancient version of OL?

I have to agree, the user needs to adjust to not using Outlook 2000

I mean, its only 12 years old....

ditto on upgrading or using something else.

Even Outlook 2003 craps the bed with Exchange 2010 whenever the guys at work reboot the server.
