Old PC Won't Connect to Internet

Hello all. My parents are fed up with their computer and want to use my old one, circa 2001 with XP. Things seem to be working fine, except that it refuses to connect to the internet. The connection says limited or no connection available, and when I try to repair it, it says it can't renew the IP address. I've tried resetting the modem 3 times, reconnected the cord once, restarted the computer twice. I uninstalled Norton Antivirus 2005 since it hasn't been renewed on this computer. I can't think of what else it could be. Plus, I think it might have been working when I first plugged it in, because it seemed to have downloaded some Windows updates (it prompted me to restart the computer).

What else can I check?

chck the properties, if it a 169 IP address, it has locked a non-existant one and the only way to unlock it is to reinstall windows to my knowledge,.

See if you have a static ip address assigned. If so, remove it.

It's weird, that's exactly what it started with. I finally got it working this morning, though, after completely disconnecting the modem for a few minutes. Stupid thing.

sorry man but totally untrue. the 169.x.x.x is the default range a pc will display when no dhcp/router/etc can be found. its a generic range just like "this page cannot be displayed" is a generic error in IE when it could be any number of problems.
