Ok Sprint doesn't suck anymore...
sometimes if your phone is old you have to go to one of their stores and get a 'software upgrade'. These are wonderful tidbits of info that frekkin sprint loves to forget to say. Once you get one of these, your phone can 'talk' to any of the new towers that have been installed since you purchased ur phone.

There is no such software that will enable your Sprint phone to talk to new towers.
If Sprint built a new tower next door to you house overnight, your phone would see and use that tower immediately. All Sprint phones are designed to see the Sprint signal regardless.
Software upgrades fix other things like bugs, not tower recognition.
You might be referring to a PRL upgrade (which you get from the store, also). This is the Preferred Roaming List. It's tells the phone how to access other towers and other networks AFTER exhausting Sprint first. If we have a free roaming agreement with Fairfax Cellular and a paid roaming agreement with Manassas Cellular, we list Fairfax as "preferred" and we make Manassas second. On January 1st when Fairfax starts charging us $2 a minute, we up-rev the PRL, this time we make Manassas preferred and we negative out Fairfax so you can't ever use their towers no matter what.
But none of our customers will be able to benefit this unless they get a new PRL, which they can get by going into the store for an upgrade, or they can get one over-the-air, we push it to them.
IN ANY CASE, all of our millions of phones already sold will always see and recognize a Sprint-owned tower and network anyday, anytime.
Just wanted to clear-up that almost 5 year old rumor. BTW, all carriers are like this including Verizon, Cingular, ATT, etc. And also we don't forget to say these things, they are not important to the customer so we don't broadcast. You wouldn't be interested in most of the blah blah we have to say anyway.
