I'm asking for the Zune AV kit for my birthday you can pick up the v2 of it for about $70 on amazon. Since it has a glass screen it's alot harder to scratch (none yet) than the iPod classic with it's plastic screen and VERY VERY scratch prone backside so I don't think it needs a case or scratch resistant screen film. Other than that I'm waiting for a good car kit for it. One that plugs into my stock head unit and not one that uses an FM transmitter.

MS is doing their keynote at GDC right now and one of the things just announced is games for the Zune !

theres a way to do it w/o using an FM transmitter, you can even get the zune display to show up, but you need on of those expensive Avic head units. Still pretty cool though...

That's pretty bad ass! I may just have to get one of those headunits.

More info about the games on Zune.

Very neat.

In addition, since the Zune has Wi-Fi, you can also do multiplayer games as well! You'll be able to multiplay from Windows to Xbox to Zune, which means that you might be able to develop one game for three platforms (with slight tweaks for each) that people can play with each other. Definitely cool.

So I guess the Zune is BLOWING UP! I just got back form the gym and I saw 2 other people with Zunes! That equals the amount of Zunes I saw all of last year in just one day! I was suprised when I saw the first one (a white zune 30) the chick who was rockin it was pretty hot, I should've used it as a conversation starter but alas she left shortly after I saw her Then about a minute later I looked over and some dude had a blk zune 30. I was thinking about talking to him and trying out the social squirting aspects of the thing but I passed. Maybe I'll try it on that chick if I see her again.

Even more info about the games

We got a chance to check out the first functioning games for Zune and were able to answer a few -- but not many -- questions about how this thing's bound to play out.

For starters, first-gen Zunes don't appear to be ruled out by any means, but it's going to be dependent on the game controls. Zauri, the sample space shooter game demoed today, uses the Zunepad, thus wouldn't work (as well) on a Zune 30. Nothing has been decided as to whether games will universally require 2nd-gen Zunes, though.
Use of the Zunepad in Zauri was as a trackpad and omnidirectional -- it wasn't just up / down / left / right, as in the menus.
Right now the system partitions a mere 16MB for storing games, although this might change.
Right now there isn't a professional-grade SDK to announce; all titles should initially be done up in XNA Studio.
Means of distribution (i.e. games loaded through an installer, through the Zune desktop app, or through Zune Marketplace?) has not yet been decided.
The first beta development tools will be out this Spring.
There are no plans for Zune game sharing (yet), so to play with a friend wirelessly you both must have the game on your Zune.
There was plenty more we wanted to know but Microsoft definitely stressed that this is an incredibly early announcement, and many of the details we're all lusting after are still being hammered out. Again, we'll know more in Spring and Summer.

I'm imagining a kick ass golf game like golden tee or even bowling for the Zune. With the Zune pad that could be pretty fun!

I think a case would be a good idea in case it dropped. I just don't know which one to get.

Well I use the kung-fu grip I was born with, that usually helps!

If you were worried about damaging the HD in the Zune then maybe one of the soft rubber like cases to help absorb the force. I think I hard case would just easily transfer the force from the fall.

Zune ain't that great so far. Like someone else said Wi-Fi sharing is pretty much useless at this point. Why have Wi-Fi sharing and not Wi-Fi internet? "Premium" earbuds aren't so premium because they don't stay in your ear! And the software is very hard to organize, I'm guessing ipods is much easier if your itunes is already organized to your liking. Isn't there a way to import all your songs to Zune with your already established itunes settings. For example, my itunes is organized with all my albums, but when they transfer to Zune and you browse by album each song counts as the album.

Zune uses the ID3 tags of the mp3s to organize your song information. The easiest way to organize your collection is with a program like mp3tag. At least in my experience.

The Zune is meant to be an Portable Media Player not a laptop hence why it doesn't have an internet browser. The iTouch isn't really in the same product class.

I think the premium earbuds are great, have you tried changing out the earbuds? They are replaceable. I've found that the smallest ones work great for me and stay in very well even when I go running a feat that was impossible with my $50 Sony in ear headphones that they replaced.

If your iTunes music folder is in the list of monitored folders in the Zune software settings -itshould be since by default iTunes music is stored in the music folder-than any changes you make with iTunes should be automatically recognized by Zune.

I changed out to the smallest earbuds and they work better. All my music on on an external so when Zune imports it over it's just a mess now. I guess i'll check out MP3tag. But that could take a loooong time. If I change the mp3 ID tags will it mess up itunes?

I'm a regular contributor on Zuneboards. This might help you: http://www.zuneboards.com/forums/tut...-mp3-tags.html

And no, it won't mess up Itunes. in fact, since ITunes and Zune both use ID3, it should help in both applications.

FUCK YES! Zune update 2.5 tomorrow!

<a href="http://gizmodo.com/387446/zune-25-update-brings-tv-shows-more-social-networking-improved-software-features" class="top"><b>Zune 2.5 Update Brings TV Shows, More Social Networking, Improved Software Features</b></a></h2>

<div class="entry">
<!-- google_ad_section_start -->

<p><img src="http://gizmodo.com/assets/resources/2008/05/newzune1.png" class="center" style="display: block; float: none;" width="494" height="267">The Zune 2.5 Spring update launches tomorrow, and with it comes purchasable TV shows and even more social networking functions. The big part is more tightly-integrated social stuff—like being able to see your friends' Zune cards inside of the Zune software instead of heading to your browser—the upside of which is automatically getting the full tracks that your friends have recently listened to if you're a Zune Pass subscriber. This takes up about 100 megs per friend card. There's also improvement in the player itself, like the return of auto playlists and the introduction of gapless playback. Wee!</p>
<p><img src="http://gizmodo.com/assets/resources/2008/05/newzune3.jpg" class="center" style="display: block; float: none;" width="448" height="336"></p>
<p>Other cool social stuff:</p>

<p>• Xbox Live-ish icons on your Zune Card that are like achievements, awarding people who listen to an artist the most or passing a total number of song plays.<br>
• Dynamic friends' list that shows what everyone's listening to. Find out about the band Tokyo Police Club from your buddies.<br>
• Windows Live Messenger "now playing" integration<br>
• Album reviews! Tell everyone what you think about so-and-so's latest album, because the world needs to know.</p>
<p><img src="http://gizmodo.com/assets/resources/2008/05/newzune4.jpg" class="center" style="display: block; float: none;" width="640" height="480">But the big thing is the video store, which comes now with 4,800 music videos and downloadable TV episodes for $2. Their current partners are <b>NBC</b>, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central and Cartoon Network. There's going to be future Zune Social integration for video, but nothing yet. Microsoft's also leaving the door open for original content and programming as well, but there's no video sharing/squirting as of yet on the hardware devices.</p>
<p><img src="http://gizmodo.com/assets/resources/2008/05/newzune2.jpg" class="center" style="display: block; float: none;" width="640" height="480"></p>
<p>Other changes to the player include:<br>
• Auto Playlists (smart playlists) are back! They're not as powerful as they were before—or as iTunes is—but they're automatically updating playlists that you can have based on your criteria.<br>
• <b>Gapless playback</b>. Finally.<br>

• Easy drag-and-drop song metadata editing.</p>
<p>The update should go live somewhere between 10PM PDT and 4AM PDT tomorrow.</p>
<p><img src="http://gizmodo.com/assets/resources/2008/05/newzune5.jpg" class="center" style="display: block; float: none;" width="363" height="480"></p>
<p><iframe src="http://channel8.msdn.com/Posts/5644/player/" scrolling="no" width="320" frameborder="0" height="325"></iframe>

Gapless playback! Finally!

There also should be the CTP for games coming very soon if it's not included with this!

Microsoft's still isn't solid on a final consumer release date for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/20/microsoft-announces-games-for-zune-via-xna-studio/">XNA games for the Zune</a>, but they are aiming for the first CTP (community technology preview) to be released in May. We also learned that Zune games can support ad-hoc wireless play with up to eight players, the devices won't support any hardware 3D acceleration, the <a href="http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&amp;ct=res&amp;cd=2&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2F www.engadget.com%2F2008%2F02%2F20%2Fgames-for-zune-details-hands-on%2F&amp;ei=pkIfSK3HKIyKggPP3MywDQ&amp;usg=AFQjCN Fs2V3FUr0f05dHRNZUurSvfw_LZA&amp;sig2=bggTRqzfzayZ-KJSXnncCQ">"16MB for storing games" we heard before</a> actually refers to how much Zune RAM games can take over, and Microsoft's got at least four games running on the platform (which may or may not ever be released to the public): Zauri (which we've already seen -- video after the break), as well as Hexic, Potato Chase, and Alien Takeover.<br><br>

No and I wouldn't expect any, it's priced the same as the iPod but it's better I don't think they want to start a price war.

I just updated to 2.5 and I'm very happy! It adds the few features I was missing from iPod/iTunes like gapless playback, smart playlists, and enhanced metadata editing! The update also fixed a couple issues I was having with metadata the Zune software. Now I'm just waiting on the Games CTP which should be in the next week or two!

If the connector is designed to work with all mp3 players -which means it's just a headphone jack-and not just the iPod than yes it will work. If it's just a flat 30-pin dock connector for the iPod only than no it won't. I don't know what this connector looks like so I can't say.

Seriously, iPod touch + jailbreak > anything.

iPod touch + 2.0 (with Exchange support and 802.1x) + jailbreak > anything + 1

The isn't even in the same price range as the Touch. Laptop>iTouch! That's basically what you're saying. Plus my Zune has more than twice the storage of the $500 iTouch and yet it's only half the price. 80gb>32gb (literally) I don't see much use of Wi-Fi on the touch I'd rather have the WWAN like the iPhone (which I'm probably getting soon). Maybe it's just me but where I go if I'm in Wi-Fi range than I have access to a computer. browsing teh net on 24" monitor> browsing teh net on 3.5" screen.

OH and don't forget you're gonna have to pay to update your iTouch just like you have to do for the last update. This update was FREE! So was the update to the 2.0 firmware for the original Zune 30 before it. Apple you! Have fun paying for features I'd rather do on a computer for free!

I paid close to $800 a few years ago for a Pocket PC that does basically the same stuff, only with a shitty screen and a shitty user interface and 0 gigs. Yeah, with the iPod Touch most people can't have ALL their music at the same time (I can but that fills it up 90%) but I'll gladly give that up for the UI that's fun to use, pictures, movies, and most of all the software. It's basically the coolest and slickest portable software platform to come out in the last X years. It makes the Pocket PC and all other MP3 players look like they're 3-5 years behind. It was like going from Palm to Windows Mobile.

Has it become easier to jailbreak since I stopped doing it?
I downloaded a program, hit one button, and it was done.

That's what I thought too, and I was having second thoughts about getting it. But after about a week I was hooked. I can easily fill a few minutes of waiting for something with surfing whether I'm at home or at work, it's actually quite convenient.

I'll gladly give up the extra space of a HD player for the form factor and the massive gorgeous screen. I'm ok with not having all my music at once, and I almost never watch movies on it so I'm ok with rotating those too. But the mobile browser on it absolutely kills any other mobile browser. It makes a great offline reader too.

It already has more features than Zune ever will, with a multitouch UI that Zune will never have. I'm aware of the $20 upgrade I'll have to pay for stuff like Exchange and 802.1x. After that's done, there's nothing else I'll need to pay for and minor firmware fixes have been free. It's worth the money IMO for a PDA that's years ahead of the competition and also plays MP3s and movies.

PS.

I'll have the best of both worlds I'll have my Zune and eventually an iPhone! So there! And no I don't want to combine them into one device. Also the Zune UI is quite cool.

I just got the Zune Pass (something that Apple has no equal too) and I'm downloading a shit load of songs right now!

Also if you're willing to try it the Games for Zune CTP is available but it's geared for developers and not consumers. YOU'll have to download XNA game studio and set it up with your Zune and then download the Games and sync them with XNA game studio. It's kindof like the iPhone/iTouch 2.0 sdk right now, it's not very user friendly. The directions don't look that hard so I'll probably do it later.
