New Laptop- question on upgrading memory

Computer geeks... I have a question on upgrading my memory on my laptop. Currently @ 8gb (4x2), but wanted to upgrade to 16gb (8x2). I went on crucial, and noticed a few options. PC3-14900 or PC3-12800. Obviously 14900 is faster, but will it matter for my particular model? Will both work the same? Here are my specs if this helps:

• Lenovo y50
• i7-4710HQ Processor (2.50GHz 1600MHz 6MB)
• NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 4GB
• 8.0GB PC3-12800 DDR3L SDRAM 1600 MHz
• Hybrid 1TB 5400 RPM+8GB SSHD

thanks,

Whatever is the max speed for the machine then that's what you'll get out of it.

Anything over that will just downgrade to what the mobo can run.

Wrong forum, moderator.

Total noob, but how do I determine "max speed?"

ps- this was a rambling post so didn't think it fit in technology subforum, and has nothing to do with gaming. Yes, As a moderator, i did consider all options. But still waiting on yummy to move this thread. haha

If Crucial says it will work with the faster bus speed, get it

I would double check your manual to see what the top rated memory speed you can run is

Lenovo Y50 has a 1600 Mhz bus so faster memory shouldn't be of any benefit

Someone asked a similar question as yours here: http://forum.crucial.com/t5/Ballisti...00/td-p/139801

Question:

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad X230t Tablet I7-3520M. I’m interested in the 16GB (8GBx2), Ballistix 204-pin SODIMM, DDR3 PC3-14900 memory modules. This link for one 8GB of those modules states it will fit the X230t & other forum posters stating they fit in some other ThinkPads (T430, T&W530, Y series, etc). It should fit in the X230t...correct?

The 1st part of my other question is will the PC3-14900 RAM be clocked down all the way to PC3-12800 or will I see any improvements?
Crucial response:

Thank you for contacting us today. From what I can find on Lenovo's site your system has a front side bus speed of 1600mhz, so the RAM will clock down to 1600 mhz as you had suspected. Both the PC3-14900 and the PC3-12800 will work the same in your system. The Ballistix sport memory modules do not require the timings to be adjusted. They are set up to do that on there on. There is a price difference between the two to keep in mind since you will not be seeing the full speed of the PC3-14900. Unless you are planning on using these in another system in the future, I would recommend just purchasing the PC3-12800. Both RAM modules will run the same temperature as they do have the same voltage, so there really is no advantage to purchasing the faster speed with this Thinkpad. Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns about this memory upgrade.

Yep, it'll get clocked down. Get the 12800 and save some money.

The first reply is the correct reply. This is computer basics 101.

Also,

Step 1. Ask forum for legal advice
Step 2. Forum gives legal advice
Step 3. .....
