I havent bought a router in a long time, I am going to get an AC wireless router, but one of the laptops in the network will be using a 2.0 USB AC adapter and not 3.0.
The desktop will be hooked in by ethernet to the wireless router, will the entire network including the desktop be slowed down by the weakest link which is the 2.0 USB adapter?

The USB to 802 AC probably won't really use the speed due to being USB 2. If it had a built in G or N wireless card, that would be faster. Desktop doesn't use it either being Ethernet. And no, the USB adapter had no effect on the speed.
So if I had in theory a desktop hooked in through Ethernet by an ac router, a laptop with a 3.0 USB ac adapter and a laptop with wirelees n or g , you guys are saying that the weakest device which iks the laptop won't make the router slow down its speeds to be compatible with the g or n laptop thereby slowing down the entire network?
Also the desktop plugged in by Ethernet to the ac router is no different speed wise than a g or n router?

A direct cable connection to your router will provide that computer with faster internet than any device using a wireless signal.

The router speed is not affected by what's attached to it, unless you have 100's of devices connected to it at one time. The speed of the network is the router to whatever adapter it's plugged into. Gigabit Ethernet is fastest, then 10/100 Ethernet, then 802 AC, then N, then G, A and B.
