Check out CNET's reviews. Most printers are based on photo quality but if that's not a primary concern you're going to need to do some research.

If anyone is looking for a good cheap B/W laser. Staples has a Brother 1440 on sale for $100. I paid over $200 for it 2 years ago. Its nice, pretty fast too. A little loud but I don't care, its not like I print all day.

First thing you should do is research how much the consumables costs. Usually, the printers aren't that expensive - but the ink, head, etc, can kill you down the road.

my suggestion would be the hp psc1210 or the step up, extremely cheap and it's an all in one, scanner, copier and printer, very handy.

if you don't need color, get a laser printer. 2 advantages: 1) ink never dries, since it's already dry (good if you hardly use the printer) and 2) cartridge capacity is roughly 3-4 x more than your usual black cartridge. the laser printer i have at home is the HP Laserjet 1012 - $150

I have the hp 5150... I like it a lot, but the ink cartridge is kinda small. It is a little cheaper to replace than most other HP cartridges though ($18 vs. $30ish).

i was looking around and it seems like canon ink is a lot cheaper then HP ink, is that usually the case? the canon printers seem to be getting good reviews as well.
