Need new CD-RW drive. Pls help.
Acer CD-RW drive sucks!
I have wasted 5 Sony CD-Rs in a row tonight (while trying to burn an Audio CD)! I had no problem burning MP3 or data files.
Is it a problem with the CR-R drive or Easy CD-Creator?
I need good recommendation for a new CD-RW drive (compatible with Easy CD-Creator.) Please help.

Hey oracion, sorry to hear about your CD burner problems...
Could you clearify what exactly is happening?
- Does the CD start to burn and then eject?
- Does the TOC (Table of Contents) not write? - In this case, the CD will burn, but will not be able to play in a player.
- Or does nothing happen at all?
You may want to check out some freeware like Alta Vista's Sonic Burner (what I use to first convert MP3 to CD format and then burn). This would help determine if it is the software, or the actual burner that is having trouble. Check it out at their homepage or search....
Hope this helps,

There were errors in the middle of the burning. For example, I was burning 7 songs and it ran into an error on the 4th one and ejected the disc.
I'll check out the software you suggested. Thanks.

Try upgrading your burning software first
Make sure you go to the adaptec or neor website and upgrade your existing version of the software. There are fixes and patches coming out every couple of months. Try that out to see if it will fix your problem. I don't suggest getting the roxio (adaptec) 5 version of the burning software yet. They need to fix a few things on that version before i am going to use it. Right now the 4th edition and nero is making me HAPPY right now! I highly recommend getting the Plextor16X or 24X burner if you are planning to buy a new cd-rw!

SL1200 is correct i believe, i think the TDK is rebadged Plextor which makes it excellent value.
go to www.spoofee.com and click on past deals of the day section. they have some really good sub100 dollar shipped CDRW deals going on. while i think plextor is best, yamaha is also quite good from my experience. i think a good yamaha, or plextor (tdk) are great choices i heard plextors burn proof (?) technology is quite good. I use Nero software for burning no complaints. if you are really concerned about not messing cds up, my friend has had awesome stability with scsci burners. it will cost more cuz you have to get a scsci adapter, but you can get cheap Adaptec scsi for like 50 bucks. he hasn't lost a cd for a year. i use an HP and it sucks, if you want to be safe and are having problems, try taking the write speed down to 4x. that is generally safer and i burn straight without creating an image first at that speed.

I just got the BRAND NEW TDK 24/10/40 burner for $149 at Fry's.
I think regular price is $200+
And if you are familiar with Fry's, they always mislabel things and you can get them at a lower price than it should be.
Came with Nero 5.5 which is all that I need. All the other software that came with it sux, except for Acrobat Reader 5.
Thier jukebox POS software that came with it is sorry, a monkey could create better software..
I was able to burn a CD in less than 5 min w/o errors.. I have to go out and buy some faster media now..
It's a great drive..
If TDK is really a rebadge Plextor, I'm super happy about it..
Egghead.com also has a special deal for this drive for $145 with a 30pk TDK 80min CDRs. But I think they are temparaly out of stock, and the deal is about to end..
Btw, Fry's bought out Egghead.com

With most things, that 24x is the maximum speed under ideal conditions.. I think I'm getting more like 16X speed.
It's like your car, you can get < 6.5 seconds if you had the AC off, good tires, right temp, etc...
Doing some tests...
The very fist time i tried it, I burned about 600MB at 16X and it did it in under 5 min..
I'm going to try and burn it again but at a higher speed and see if there is much of an improvement ( I doubt it ).
I first tried to burn something with many things running.. including being connected to the internet, and several windows open... this yielded not so great result.. it was about 8 min to burn an Audio CD with 18 tracks on it from mp3 to audio format.
Very unhappy about this cuz, this is what I mainly do with it..
695MB on the 24x media.. took 7 min This time, I tried it with nothing else running.. it seemed like it took longer than I have expected.. this much data on my 8X yamaha took about 12 minutes.. so there is an improvement, but nothing close to what it claims..
The files were serveral directories containing ms office files, jpeg, and some mp3s.
It says that it can burn a full CD in 4 min, but this is max and using CLV recording..
I assume that if I burned an image rather than files, it would be faster.. That is going to be my next test.. a CD to CDR copy, and then CD to image to CDR copy..
overall, I'm satisfied, but not overly happy with it. But for $150, it's a great deal. If you can get a 16X Plextor or TDK for less than this price, go for it.. 24X is not real yet.. It's not worth the money to spend more than what I paid for it.
