T42 is for $1,658.00. Is that a better deal?

I think my biggest concern is battery life.

Get the big battery for your T series....7 hours! (of course, realistically, that's about 4, but still good!!!)

He doesn't get discounts on Toshiba...and I certainly wouldn't put a Toshiba anywhere near the quality/support of an IBM.

depends on the model.

Tecras get a 3 year warranty already, and they should be cheaper than IBM counterparts.

I'm not saying Toshibas are a piece of shit, but I will tell you I've dealt with their support, and it ain't impressive. IBM's support has been spectacular thus far since my company switched over from Dell to IBM. They are quick, speak English, and don't ask every fucking newb question in the book. If I say a HDD is fucked up, they say OK, we're sending a new one.....not "Could you check your fucking BIOS version?" or "Could we run a 3 hour diagnostic CD?"

School wants me to have a laptop. They have a wireless network, so I need a laptop to take advantage of that and then all I really care about it battery life. It doesn't have to be super fast, but it does have to be a PC. Also, I don't need something that will crap out after a year... Again, the discount is on Dells and IBMs.

Thanks again for all the help guys!

I understand.

You are biased cause you already had some IBM experience with their customer support.

I am biased too cause once I dealt with Toshiba support, but from the near 5 laptops and 3 PDAs I have bough from them, I have only called them once concerning an issue with my E335 PDA battery. After some questions they sent me a prepaid box so I could ship back my PDA and had it repaired.

I have not dealt with IBM, but sure they should be really good, for the higher prices they need to be good; even better than the competition.

If you have narrowed to just those 2 brands, go for IBM. I've seen too many Dell laptops going bad, and trust me, you do not wanna talk to Dell customer service; they really suck.

I have the 9-cell battery plus the slim polymer battery. 9.5 hrs without a recharge.

Also...Get the 14" display instead of the 15" (for more battery life).

I go the whole day without a recharge.

I personally have an Acer Travelmate 8000 now. Amazing stuff for a decent price.
128MB ATI video card, 2.0GHz Centrino processor, 60GB hard drive, and 512MB of RAM (which I'll soon upgrade to 1G)...

Now, that being said, I love Toshibas too...so, you can't go wrong with them. IBMs are nice but they are butt-ugly and at times too pricey for what you get. Dell laptops I urge you to avoid...Sony makes pretty machines but drivers for them can drive you batty.

Good luck!

IBM will last you forever. Toshiba probably will. Just remember you get what you pay for when it comes to laptops.

Ah ... the question that had me bothered for quite sometime before i made my purchase! Toshibas.. hmmm.. i dont like their build quality, so its out of the question for me. I wanted to get ibms, but, silly ibm doesnt' have any retail outlet or display location for me to actually drop 2-3k for a laptop, so that was out of question. Dell? they just feel cheap, plus, their lcd screen is horrible in my opinion. What are you loooking for ? for me, i wanted a laptop with super crisp and bright display.. and after checking out all the possible models i can see.. i have decided to go with Sony's Xbrite Display technology. You really need to go see the actual unit of sony's lcd screen on their laptops. Its just amazing!

Right now, Sony Vaio VGN-S series can be had for really cheap.. one thing that bothered me a lot is that sony's prices are all over the map everywhere. So i cant really tell you a price or whats a good deal. They have promotions or discount randomly! Anyways, mine is a Centrion 1.7 775 cpu, 60G, ati 9200 radeon, 512ram, a combo drive. Thats about it. If i have to guess, i would guess its about $1800 right now.

Sony Vaios are known for their sleek design and portability. Its about 3-4 lbs i believe, probably less, really lite. Its very slim also. The battery life is about 3-4 hrs realistically. Anyways the best part is.. this is MADE IN JAPAN ! thats right ! For ppl who believe its about quality countrol not about where it is made from, fine, go buy something made in china!

The thing most people don't understand is why IBM costs more. Its simple...it costs more cause of the build quality and ensuring everything is protected. Which other laptop has a magnesium frame, think light, embedded security chip, dual antennas (UltraConnect) or an active protection system that protects it against falls up to 3 ft?

Everyone just goes "but X Brand is such and such cheaper and you get the same processor, amount of memory, video card...etc"

Just some things to take into consideration.
