Moving my mobile phone number

So, a co-worker just bought a T610, and at lunch today we paired her phone to my car, made a few calls, etcetera, and to make a long story short, the fate of my universe now depends on how quickly I can get a Bluetooth phone.

I'm seriously considering a T637 through AT&T based on the reviews that I've read on this site, and the "make $200" Amazon deal doesn't hurt as I'll have to cancel a Verizon Wireless contract to do this.

My question (at last!) is about moving my Verizon moble phone number to the new phone. Is that something that I'll do when I purchase the phone through Amazon, or will I wait to get the phone, activate it with a new number, and then transfer my Verizon number later on? Anybody been through this? TIA.

usually I think Amazon will have a option if you want to transfer your number over,

Like when I activate New Customers on T-Mobile, you have to put in that the customer wants to transfer a Number right than, same with sprint, But I am sure you can call in later and do it too

Thanks for the response. After searching and searching on Amazon, I came across this link:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...620190-7075865

The good news is that for most providers, Amazon has a way to transfer your number. The bad news is that AT&T isn't one of those providers. I think I'll call a local AT&T store and ask if they can do it after the fact.

Minor update, for anybody who is even remotely interested: AT&T claims that they cannot move a mobile phone number to an AT&T account after that account has been activated. So, for example, I can't create a new AT&T account and then move my Verizon number to that account three months down the road. This also means that I can't avail myself of the current Amazon offer for a T637 at negative cost and move my Verizon number over, because Amazon has no way to transfer a number to a new AT&T account at activation and AT&T won't do it after the fact.

Frustrating, to say the least. The only way to keep my number is to pay the $175 Verizon early termination fee *and* activate a new account through AT&T (rather than Amazon), which entails their setup charges and their price on the T637 (currently $75 or something). You'd think they'd want my business more than that, and you'd think the local number portability act would be more flexible than that, too.

Thank you, I appreciate that. I think that regardless of the contract and phone number limitations, I'm going to wind up with the phone in the next few weeks. I'm just too impulsive not to

So can you tell me specifically what the AT&T firmware "customizes" that your firmware would "uncustomize"?

Ah, right. I like the idea of a "stock" phone. I'll PM you or something when I get the phone. Thanks!
