Memory stick question...

I have a friend whose son is headed off to College next year. Would a memory stick with 64GB be enough for him to back up his stuff or should I go 128GB. I am not looking to spend too much on his Christmas present and just researching.

Help!

Don't get a memory stick, get an external USB hard drive. you can get 250gb for about $60 a much better value than a memory stick

I think the 64GB is good enough for a flash drive, which is always nice to have because it's very portable and convenient for presentations. You don't need anything bigger than that because they tend not to last really long. As someone already pointed out, you can also think about getting a portable USB hard drive instead since it is cheaper (250 GB for ~$70) and more durable. Either way, I'm sure your friend's son will appreciate it!

Unless size is a specific issue, most portable hard drives are about the size of a small notepad. I have a WD one and it looks nice. Aside from having to carry a short USB cable around, I would much prefer a portable hard drive than a flash drive for the price difference alone.

Yes get a thumb drive. But try to find the one where you can attach it to your key chains. I've misplaced my memory stick too many times to rely on it. I have a 32gb thumb drive on my keychain so it follows me everywhere I go.

I think getting 128gb is over kill because people mainly use thumb drives to back up documents/presentations. Although if he does A LOT of presentation, then a 64gb would suffice.

Well, a flash drive is more durable then the HD in general (solid state)....But, yea, get a USB HD.

It really depends upon what type of "stuff" he is going to be storing. If it is just papers, notes, data from research, and like material, 64GB is more than enough and a flash drive (memory stick) is fine and, in fact, preferable. However, it he is apt to store a lot of heavy data like videos, sound/wav files, jpeg files, and pictures because of his major, then a greater amount of storage capacity may be needed.

a portable hard drive will be much better if you want that much memory space.

i have lost/broke/gotten stolen 4-5 memory sticks over my last 4 years. my suggestion is to get 8gb max for a memory stick because the odds of having the same one over 4 years is very unlikely.
