Media server on 5Ghz wireless issue

I'm not sure if there is a specific section to post this type of question, so, if I'm posting on a wrong section, let me know.

I currently have E3000 (simultaneous dual band AP) and have both TV and PC on wireless, and receiver on wired connection. Note that TV is on 2.4ghz band and PC is on 5ghz band.

Problem is here. PC is set up as media server and both TV and receiver can act as a client. From both TV and receiver, I can detect that my PC has server setup and see the contents list just fine. However, it won't play the files or view photos (says not in compatible file format).

Only solution I have right now is to put the PC in 2.4ghz band as well, then, streaming is fine.

What would be a problem here?

*cliff
-e3000 router (simultaneous dual band)
-TV is on 2.4ghz band
-receiver is wired connection
-when PC is on 5ghz, streaming to both TV (2.4ghz) and receiver (wired) fails.
-when PC is on 2.4ghz, streaming is fine
-media server is setup on Windows 7 via WMP

Could be different encryptions for 2.4g and 5g.... I have a dual band router as well and I tried to keep everything the same (i.e., user id, password, etc.) on both frequencies. Of course 5g doesn't transmit as far as 2.4g.

The way I understand it is your dual band router is like 2 different routers in 1.

Each router has its own radio frequency, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, and each has its own SSID too.

Your router probably doesn't have a way to combine the 2 frequencies into one. That's why you have to put the PC in the 2.4 GHz frequency.... 2.4GHz and 5 GHz can't talk to each other.

Think of the 2 frequencies (radios) like FM and AM radio. They're different. You have to be in FM mode to get FM stations and you have to be in AM mode to get AM stations.

No, I should be able to talk between both networks. It's best to give them the same SSID and password.

If you need help, I got you!

confused as to what exactly fixed the issue.. i changed the SSID (no you cannot give same SSID for both frequencies) and security to WPA-TKIP (from WPA2-AES) and everything is fine now -_-;

That's why you cannot give same ssid. You have no control over which rf you are connecting to.

I'm surprised Stunna didn't tell you to put dd-wrt on it http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Linksys_E3000

I guess you get that with his paid option

the fuck? you have dd-wrt and you can't name your dual band wifi networks the same name!?!? I HAVE dd-wrt and I have named my dual band wifi networks the same name and password and it works fantastic.

See earlier post about your router being a POS....

I have the netgear WNDR3700, if you were curious....

i'm sure i can. see my earlier post about not having control over which network you connect to. when i said you can't, i'm saying you should not. my bad if you misunderstood it.

my 2.4ghz is mixed mode with channel bandwidth set to auto while 5ghz is strictly for 11n with 40mhz channel bandwidth for higher throughput. oh and security on them are different as well.

Why would you want to choose? 5GHz is going best if the signal is strongest, if it's not then it should just switch to 2.4Ghz automatically and you shouldn't have to worry or even think about it.
