Great thread. I'll be getting a new notebook soon too.
I have had my Inspiron 1000 for about 4 years now and the only thing I did to it was a clean XP install and upgrade the RAM from 256 to 768. This thing has been a great bang for the buck and I have not had any issues what so ever. I caught it on sale for $600 shipped (with a free printer and free 2 day shipping)
Now I want to upgrade. I've been leaning toward the Lenovo (because of it's heritage). We'll see.
