Waiting on Vista to come out... I'm getting a new laptop in January. Hopefully, prices will be much better then.

Are Asus laptops reliable?

Sure, but it's not the same thing as having a clean install of the O.S.

Plus, I don't need a laptop until I move to Europe in February.

as I mentioned, I have an Asus Z70va, and this thing is way tight. Seriously one of the best built laptops that I've ever come across. I agree w/ bobbydoedoe, ibm and asus > * The build quality can't be beat. Plus, Asus laptops look so damn sexy. In addition, yes, they are very very reliable. I love my carbon fiber frame

That still doesn't solve the problem of portability.

Many people do have serious desktops that are all decked out, but when it comes to working remotely, business meetings, conferences, etc... laptop is the only way to go, unless you can make do with a PDA.

I have a $4K desktop on my desk at home, but I need something I can take with me to Milan, to school, etc.

The PC is too big and cumbersome to take with me (I need the luggage room for my camera, clothing, etc.); so I'm "retiring it" (leaving it to my mom). Her PC only has 256 MB RAM... she needs an upgrade.

I will have to check them out then... too bad one can't customize the features, though.

HP is not the largest PC manufacturer for no reason... They have really stepped up their entire line in the past 3 years. I'm still working on a nc6000 laptop from about 2 1/2 years ago and I've never had an issue- let alone the numerous other HP's I've worked on and helped friends and family purchase.

You can customize them. I built mine from scratch as a barebones model.

how'd you accomplish this? Is there an online configuration tool like they have for dell and hp? I went to the asus website and a few of their distributors but didn't find anything.

here's a few Asus resalers to name:

www.istnc.com (where I bought mine)
www.geared2play.com

The Asus Ensemble are pre-built, where the Built on Asus are the models you can customize. They start @ barebone price from around $500-800 usually.

You guys really didn't know this? Do yourselves a favor and scope out www.notebookforums.com. There's aLOT of insightful information over there.

what are you supposed to do for mobility? if you are strictly stationary, then yes, get a desktop, otherwise, its retarded not to get a laptop

I bought two laser printers from HP last month and they were both DOA. I went online and found several other people with DOA units in the same line... albeit they make laptops at a different factory, but to me it's all the same dismal tech support and warranty. HP is no longer on my shopping list -- for anything.

ive been on notebookforums for a while now, guess I didnt look into the Asus forum hard enough. :< And, it also looks like there arent any Asus laptops with WUXGA. :< Back to Lenovo. But I have to say, save for the resolution, I got a 15.4" right to my liking (inc. the C2D 2.33) for $1700, without RAM. Not bad.

Nice to actually see a configurator for em.

I have a top of the line Sony Vaio that I just love!
I have had a HP and a Toshiba which was the biggest POS ever! No offense to anyone that has one but mine sucked majorly!!
The Vaio I have now was costly but so worth it!

Ummm, IBM is outta the laptop market. But they did make great laptops. I haven't seen any of the new Lenovo's if thats what your talking about. What a small world, I also work in the IT field and Dell's(Latitude, Optiplex, Precision and Poweredge) are our enterprise standard. It's really weird though, we have roughly less than a 3% hardware failure rate on our hardware.....
