laptop recommendation?

hey guys
i am shopping for a laptop... it's gonna be a desktop replacement. The configuration i have:

PIII 1.13 Ghz
256 SDRam
15" SXGA
30 GB hd
8X DVD / 24x8x8 CD-RW combo

i've narrowed down to

Compaq 2710 - advantage: 32 MB dedicated video memory (for games), #1 on cnet.com. No playing DVD problem as some HP users have experienced

and

HP zt1180 - advantage: about 2 pounds lighter, $100 cheaper, 10 more GB harddrive space (that i dont really need).

anyone has experience with either of these 2 machines?

not considering Dell becuase I've read too many DOA cases.

Thanks

You should get a Dell Inspiron 8100. My brother got that for 1490. He got a p3 1.0, 30 gig hard drive, 256 RAM, 16 MB Nvidia card, 8X DVD, and a 15 inch screen.

I concur. Dell is the best at the moment. How is Micron doing these days?

ok, for yall Dell 8100 owners...2 questions -

1. how heavy is it? i know its size and weight is above the average (like 9 pounds) ... but i just want to know if it can be moved around reasonably (car, airplane, work<-->home, etc)

2. how long does it take from placing order to receiving shipment?

thanks
j

The reason my brothers computer is a lil heavy is because of the screen size. He got a 15 inch screen instead of the 14.1. It weight about 8 lbs. Still pretty light in my opinion!

Same as mine. It's not heavy at all. But if you really don't need all the power, space, mem, etc.. then get a lighter laptop for cheaper.

I got the 8100 because its the supercarrier of laptops. Yes, its among the heaviest and largest out there, but it does everything. I have a fixed CD-RW/DVD drive, two batteries, modem, ethernet, PC Card X 2, USB X 2, serial, parallel, PS2, Firewire, 15" screen, irda, all without built in. Remember, the smaller you go, the more you give up. That includes a bay for a 3rd disk, battery life, screen size, and often ports. The really slim ones don't have any I/O ports. They rely on a docking station or port replicator. Who wants to carry a port replicator? Kind of defeats the point of a light machine. But if you KNOW you can travel without any disk drives or I/O, then the super slims are a lot easier to lug around.

I carried my 8100 around for 3 days this week in Atlanta with both batteries in it, the AC brick and the floppy in my case and didn't think it was too bad. The way I work, I always ended up needing what I didn't bring, so now I have everything with me. It's not a problem for me at all.
