I know Dell is not the end-all-be-all, but for value/performance, you really can't go wrong. Why do so many people buy Dell if they have an inferior product?
If you need a bulletproof product, need tech support, etc ... either go IBM or Apple. That's been my experience but for that, you need to pay a premium. Get what you pay for, right?
But for my $$$, I'll buy a Dell and put my savings toward my TL-S ...
I just got this for a little under $2050.

nothing, I bought the new iBook back in October. Its a little slower processor. I only bought it to carry around and use at school. But since then I have feel in love with it and I use it as much as my PC.
my next purchase will be a G5 desktop.
I love Thinkpads (IBM). Right now for work, I have a T42 and it's by far the best laptop I have ever used. It's solid as a rock, light, fast and extremely quiet (you can never hear the hard drive).
Before I got upgraded to the T42, I had a T23 (another excellent laptop).
My parents have a Dell 700m and my gf has both a 600m and a 300m... Dell laptops are decent enough (they got amazing deals on their laptops) but overall, I much prefer Thinkpads if $$ is not a major factor.

Quality, buy IBM........Too bad they sold off their entire line to a foreign company. IBM does not make anything in the PC and/or laptop business anymore. Not that it matters, they have been doing this for years.
I found it funny that IBM is tied with Dell and they are not even in the PC business anymore.

T42's are sweet. I have a T40 right now and I LOVE the fucking thing. Our execs get X40's, which are thin, light, small, and surprisingly fast. I used to be a Dell believer, but their shit has gone way downhill. I used to HATE IBM's, now I honestly think they are making the best laptops out there.
