Just bought a vizio 37" LCD

Bought it at costco after reading some thoughts and reviews for $1500+tax

The television is probably going back tomorrow. SD quality is poor and the HD quality is sharp, but the colors arent bright enough and dont seem to be right. My 52" Panasonic rear projection CRT from 3 years ago, blows the vizio away with HD content.

Right now i dont have a VGA cable and have it hooked up through Svideo which looks awful. Will the VGA connection look that much better?

I just cant seem to justify the money for this...

Probably will go with the 50" Samsung DLP at buy.com for $1795 shipped, no burn in, better connections, picture, etc...

thanks for the input, cause I was actually tempted to buy that TV, only for the Xbox 360 so I wouldn't have to use my Samsung DLP, but I went ahead and hooked the 360 to the Samsung anyway, and decided to put off the Vizio TV... now, I'm NOT even gonna think about it...

The Vizio isnt worth the $$$$$, the colors aren't sharp, and theres a yellow tinge to it.

Why wouldnt you use the 360 on the dlp, isnt there supposed to be no burn in, the samsung 50" dlp seems like more value for the $$$.

I dunno, the DLP's like my baby... and I was thinking that it wouldn't be a good thing... or I didn't wanna use up the hours playing all day, but turns out.... I only play about an hour a day at most... I figure... LCD's can be used all day... either for watching TV or playing games with... but I'm glad I didn't run out and got a TV just for the 360, especially now... after reading your post... thanks you saved me $1500!!!

I mean it could just be me, but I was playing with the settings for hours, and it couldnt compare to my 52" Panasonic CRT projection screen

...don't know about your local Costco, but ours have a 32" Sony LCD that's got an awesome picture... . it's little more (around $1700) and it's a smaller screen, but... bigger isn't always better...

I love their attitude too... I was asking one of the managers about a product the other day, it was something around $200, and he didn't know the answer... so he just said... "...all I can say is... buy it, and if it doens't do what you're asking me about... then just return it..."

gotta love the return policy.

if you are buying a tv for gaming, don't but a lcd. go plasma of dlp, they process the light/images quicker, lcd will tend to blur the image more than a dlp or plasma

Dumb question, but did you try to tune the TV? If you read good reviews from others, then perhaps the factory settings aren't quite to your liking?

Just a thought.

Isn't Svideo a crappy connection for HD? Doesn't the TV have a better option?

yes, considering S-video can't support HD resolutions.

and FWIW, I have a Vizio 20" LCD and that thing has component and even HDMI inputs... SO I don't know why VGA or even s-video are even in the cards.

why in the fawk are you even bothering with S-video when the TV has the following:

Inputs:
2 x RF (NTSC and ATSC tuners)
1 x HDMI (Digital Video + Digital Audio)
2 x Component + Audio
3 x Composite + Audio
1 x S-Video / Composite
1 x RGB (Analog) + Audio
1 x Service Port (RJ-45)

I was messing with S-video for the computer because I didnt have a femal to female vga connector, which i now have, and the quality as a monitor looks pretty good even though my graphics card in the laptop will only go 1024x768.

I have used the built in tv tuner for hd and it looks pretty good, but just not sure if its not worth upgrading to samsung 50" dlp for $150 more, but then again I dont get any costco warranty

To anyone who knows about surround sound etc, I need some help. I have no clue how anything attaches or works, but is this scenario possible with this television....

It has a digital optical out on the tv for the atsc tuner it has built in. Do I connect an digital optical audio cable to the back of the surround sound receiver to get surround sound when watching hdtv through the built in off air hd tuner?

Upconverting HD DVD player, standalone DVR (not through cable company), XBOX, 5.1 Surround Sound System,

I want to be able to hear surround sound through the HD DVD Player (using HDMI), then stanadlone DVR I don't know what port that typically uses (component?), and then xbox uses component, and surround sound system im not sure what it uses, but can I set it up so that all my devices will play through the surround sound receiver and the tv itself through the cable jack to coaxial connection playing surround sound? If so, can someone give me better insight. Thanks!

I'm sure your HD upconverting DVD player has an optical outlet... but your A/V receiver will have to have a optical input too...

havent bought any of the accessories yet, I want the cheapest 5.1 surround sound receiver that delivers good sound quality, has a lot of inputs and outputs, and digital optical audio in. Any suggestions?

...okay, so I went back and had to re-read your question... I going to say "YES" you can just connect directly from TV to A/V reciever...

So, you're TV's got a built in tuner?

but, as for the DVD player... I'm not too sure about the surround sound, by just using the HDMI alone...

yea, im still debating on whether to return it, it doesnt match up with the best, but when you have it alone watching it, it looks pretty good, and the built in tuner is a plus

...well, good luck, but there are guys here that can answer your question better than me... and since it's Costco... no need to hurry in returning.

Basically what Im asking is this,

I will be buying a dvr, have an xbox, and will be buying an hdmi hd upconverting dvd player...

Now I need to buy a receiver,

I want this receiver to be good enough where I can connect all my components to it and hear surround sound, and also to hear surround sound from cable television.

I don't know what needs to be connected to what in order to get this, and what features I must look for in the receiver to be able to accomplish this.

Also what cables would need to be purchased?

I think for $200, this is a pretty good deal... Denon 1705

http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product...opnav=&browse=

...but I'm trying to find out if it's got multi optical digital input... it would be nice if it did... now, on Denon's site... the newer version -1706, has 3, but I don't know about the model on Costco's site -1705.

Your (soon to have) HDMI HD upconverting DVD player will go straight to the TV, so obviously you'll need a HDMI cable... but for sound, I prefer using the digital optical going from the DVD player straight to the A/V receiver. I don't remember if you have a cable box or not... but my HD DVR Cox Cable box also has an optical outlet... which is why it's better if you have a receive with multi optical digital input...

but if your budget is more than $200, then there are more options in A/V receivers

If you're planning on playing video games (you mentioned an Xbox)... A DLP TV is NOT for you. You're better off with what you have, a plasma or RP LCD.

Now, I'm all confused... some people say DLP's are fine for gaming, why is it NOT a preferred?

No cable box, it would be $40 a month for just digital cable and 5 hdtv channels

Yea so you think the key is to find a receiver with 3 optical audio digital output for all my devices?

I can spend probably $300-$350 if I had to.

Isn't a plasma bad for gaming? I'm all confused now too

Some DLP TV's have a delay on the video from all of the processing the TV does. So your audio is slightly out of sync. Not to mention game play is as well...

This isn't with all DLP TV's though.

oh, okay... cause I don't have any problems with mine... but I have to admit... I did read about the delay thing before... which was another reason why I was considering buy a TV just for gaming... (I mentioned that on page one of this thread). But after I hooked it up... everything was fine..
