Just bought a laptop for school, what do you think?

Alright, I probably should have asked for advice earlier but I had already started doing some research initially. I guess I just want some opinions on whether you guys think that was a decent package or not . Please note that I was trying to stay under a 2k budget and this is the first laptop I buy (meaning I am not as savvy as some other people).

If its for school, I would get the smallest, lightest laptop you can find. Get a 700m.

Thought about it and it's good advice, but I didn't want a small screen. It was definitely a sacrifice getting a bigger one.

I like my Alienware laptop, but it's big, bulky and expensive.

but thats the whole point of the 700m....its tiny. I got one because its great for airplanes, classrooms or whatever. Its so small you can just stick it in a backpack and you don't even notice its in there.

I wouldn't have one as my primary computer though. Or if I did, definitely hook it up to an external screen at home.

the 700m is for the birds. just kidding. definitely small and that is great but you're right I would have to have another machine - and also, isn't it like 1.6GHz or something? or even 1.2?

Mine was far too hot and heavy. It was worse than a fat cat on my lap.

Anyway, I sold my Alienware for parts.

I might go to the "dark side" and get an Apple.

yep, mine is a 1.6 pentium M.

its not meant as a desktop replacement...its supposed to be a super portable mini computer. I just use it for traveling, surfing the net from my couch, or as a portable dvd player ... definitely not gonna work for games or running large programs.

Keep in mind the amount of cache on the Pentium M, it may only be 1.6 ghz, but it does what its meant to do quite well.

i wanted a big screen blah blah laptop and ended up getting a inspiron 9200. This thing is way to big. Funny thing is now im looking to get something small like a 700m for class and a plain ol desktop. I guess i was trying to kill 2 birds with one stone, but in the end, it was sort of a waste.

Yep. Desktop serves a completely different purpose than a laptop.

I'm typing on a Sony VAIO laptop, model PCG-FRV28. Great laptop for $750. It's got a 2.8 gig chip with 512 Mb ram, DVD burner and a 40 gig drive. It's plenty fast for just about anything.

I used to carry around a laptop around that size....then got tired of it. I'd go for the 600M with the SXGA screen (1400 x 1050 resoultion). It's nice and lightweight...

Though I went with a Lattitude D610 instead

I almost got the same setup (6000d) for my GF's grad present, except I got a faster processor (533MHz bus) but WinXP home ed (I have a copy of XP pro). Did the reformat and put in my own software. I like the widescreen but I don't like how heavy it is.

I use a 600m -- 1.6GHz (400MHz bus) with 512meg RAM. Does what I need it to do (Quicken, Office, moderating AZ, online banking, etc) and I can watch movies when I travel.

Looks like your setup will be a winner. Unless you're compiling stuff for your CAD project, your setup should be fine for most apps.

I have the Inspiron 6000 and I like it a lot. It's fast enough, light enough, and does everything I need it to do quite well.

Can you elaborate. Reason I ask is that Duke recommends the Latitude's over the Inspirons but no one really gives a good reason why. They both seem to do the exact same things and are about the same weight (well the 810 and 6200d).

Sounds like those who have it like it in general. I don't plan on doing more than school work, watch movies when I travel, surf the web, and download music and pictures so for me it seemed like the best option. I am not a gamer so that isn't a big deal for me. I know it's bigger than some other options out there but it was meant for a few things as mentioned above. After doing the research I didn't think I needed more processing power as I don't see myself running huge programs. I would have gone for the Latitude 610 or 810 but I couldn't get as good a deal on those (I got the above system for 1750 new and with a printer). I would have looked at used but I wanted something reliable with a warranty for school.

Thanks for the input.

^^^ good question.

I know people who like Latitude over Inspiron too. I haven't been able to get a concrete reason why out of them either Latitude is Dell's "business" line... Inspiron is their "home" line... my only guess is that this gives people a subconscious indication or feeling that it's "better" than the "home" version, somehow....

as for me, I have been using the same brick ass Inspiron 2650 since early 2002, when I got it - P4-M 1.7, 512mb, 30gb, XP Home. Thing hasn't failed me yet. I use it constantly - I push it to the limit. I do network gaming with it, do music, web, I once recorded 6 HOURS of a live DJ set onto it, into a single 4gb wav file. No issues. The thing is a trooper. Sure it weighs about 7-8 lbs and that is a lot by today's standards but damn, I can't complain about the performance it has given me. I am even running the original OS - never had to reformat it. The thing is a champ and I am 110% satisfied with it - end of story.

and oh yeah - it was refurb...
