No, direct mode is something completely different then adhoc mode.

I think there was a workaround before where you did not need the router with a jailbroken ipad. I distinctly remember in the video posted the guy saying you had to jailbreak. Definitely cool if you don't need to jailbreak or have a router present. I am guessing you would have to send jpg's to the ipad. Being that my camera has two card slots and can write Raw to one and jpg to the other, I should be able to save both images formats per shot, and send just the jpgs to the iPad (or least in theory)
also the pro version supports raw, so you can send those to your iPad. But since RAW files are much larger, they will take longer to transfer.

I FINALLY found an app to do what I want. It took a lot of searching, and purchasing a few different apps. This one cost $3.99 and was well worth it. It is called Private Media Folders - Photos, Video & Office by Ractor. The ONLY negative is that it requires a password to open up the app each time. Kind of annoying, but otherwise a great app. I can create folders, subfolders, and can easily import pictures from the Photo Library and any folders in there. It is fast, unlike any of the other apps I tried, and seems very stable. Has a nice clean look as well.

I'm definitely going to pick up a card soon. I doubt I will transfer RAW images to the iPad. I will store them on the second card and just transfer jpgs. I believe each RAW image on my camera is ~16-18MB.

2001AudiS4 did you pick up a D7000 (I thought I remember reading that)?
If so, I saw a video on using an eyefi card and a regular SD card. writing RAW to the SD and then jpegs to the eyefi...seemed like a sweet setup, I'll see if I can dig it up...I think it was on DTown TV.
here it is:
http://kelbytv.com/dtowntv/2011/05/05/episode-75/
-Terry White talks about the new Eye-Fi SD cards for wireless uploading and transmission and demos
you'll have to skip through to get to it...at about 18:00

I just received the case I ordered on Amazon. It is made by Snugg and its an awesome case. I LOVE it. It is SOOOO much nicer then anything I found in the store, and about half the price as most of what I was finding. Great case, definitely recommend it to others.

That's the case I have, at that price it beats anything on the market. And it's not not cheaply.

No magnets built in for auto wake?
I'll wait for something that has the same function as the smartcover.

What is so special about an iPad anyway? It's always seemed like a gimped tablet computer to me... yeah there are over 65,000 apps but I'm sure there are over a million actual programs out there. Ease of use? I don't think requiring an adapter for a USB periphery is easy or simple at all. It seems like it is several hundred dollars cheaper than other tablets, though the last time I looked at tablets it was before the iPad... they were basically laptops with swiveling touchscreens.
I know one part of ease of use comes from it's pick up and playability. With a laptop or netbook you have to go through a lengthy shutdown/startup or sleep mode functionality.
I could be wrong on many counts, but the cons heavily outweigh the pros. Someone want to school me? The camera does not impress me at all. Is it appealing because it combines several things (laptop, iPod, universal remote control) together? Making more assumptions here, but I'm sure there is a program available to control Netflix or some other thing from your laptop as well
I can definitely see it's purpose for the OP though.

After getting it I have found it is pretty useful for personal use too. Browsing the Internet is easy and much lighter to carry around the house then my laptop. The battery on my laptop lasts about an hour and a half. Apple claims 10 hours on the iPad I believe. I charged it when I got it. I used it for two days and it was down to just under 50% before I decided to plug it in. I have not charged it in two days now and it's at 64% and I used it all day yesterday while working on programming the remote software, and my girlfriend used it all night browsing the Internet.
So while I was very skeptical when it first came out, I have been converted into a fan. And I hate Apple, so it's a big thing for me to like it. I am not saying you have to give it a chance, but I bet if you did, you would probably change your mind and find it is actually a pretty useful device.

I took a couple quick videos to show how quick the remote app is, as well as how the file folder system works. I have a lot more files to upload to that.

Got my Eye-Fi in today too. Took a little bit to get it setup, but is working now. Very cool. Will be nice to use on jobs when I take pictures for my portfolio. I am sure the customers will like it. Afterall, they want to see techy stuff from their tech firm. The only thing I have to say is the range is very limited. I walked 15 feet away and it was CONSIDERABLY slower to upload, and when I went into the next room, it lost all connectivity.

Thanks for uploading the pics. Had no idea you could control your Wii and 360 too. Considering how expensive universal remotes can get, having it all merged into one device is very cool. It would certainly be nice for a home user, impressive for the (select) business user, and seems awesome for someone like yourself who uses it for both.
I probably came off a little too skeptic but that's just me. I belong in the negative people thread

oh yeah, I meant videos not pics
10 hours, that blows every laptop battery out of the water, including those "extended life" ones that weigh as much as a brick. Indeed, it wasn't very impressive to me but the only experience I've had with it was in an Apple Store and Best Buy for a few minutes at a time.

I was having issues getting the Eye-Fi app to upload the pics. Well thats not quite true, it would download, but REALLY slow. It would take a LONG time, and once it downloaded a picture, it would remain blurry for another minute or two as it must have been continuing to download the rest of the image data. I downloaded the Shuttersnitch app (friggin $15) and it again took a bit to get it setup and working. It is a lot faster and works much better. The only problem is that the range is horrible. I have to be standing next to it. Defeats the purpose of being able to create its own Ad Hoc network. I might have to get an inexpensive router to plug in at jobs I wish to use this feature for both to connect to.

if you are looking for a small AP you might check out an Airport Express, not exactly cheap, but a great size.
only negative i see is you can only administer it from a mac/pc but once it's set up it should be fine.
