iPad1 vs iPad2
iPad1 vs iPad2
I was reading through the iPad thread and there is just too much to go through. Something like 75 or 80 pages. I was just wondering if the differences are truly worth the extra money? Is the iPad 2 considerably faster? I am looking into getting one for my business, for two main purposes. One, I would like to be able to load all my portfolio pictures, product pictures and info, and perhaps some form of a quoting software so I can walk into a house and have everything right there in my hands, without the need to carry multiple books, or a more bulky computer. Being in a tech field, I think it would be the proper image as well. Secondly, I am going to be offering control solutions to my customers for the iPad/Ipod/iPhone. The iPad is the clear winner to demo the software for my customers, as well as a good tool to have to practice and master, as well as train any current or future employees. I am not too concerned with having a huge amount of hd space, I am sure a 16 or 32GB will be fine. So I am just wondering if it is worth it to spend the extra money and get the second generation or just save a few bucks and do with the original.
If all you want to do is show your portfolio, save the money and get the 1G. If you want to process images with apps that are available get the 2G, the A5 chip is a little faster. 32GB is all you'll need.
One thing to keep in mine, the 2G has 3G service with Verizon if needed, but not the 1G. If you need it at all.
Check Apples outlet store, I think they still have 1G's markdown with one year warranties.

The speed difference is pretty negligible it seems. For the roughly $160-$180 between an first gen and second gen, it seems the first gen is a better deal. The new version is just not that much faster it appears. Are there other reasons that make the iPad 2 a better option?

It has front and rear facing cameras, don't know if thats useful to you though.
You do not have to use the 3G. You can activate and deactivate it from the device itself, whenever you want. I have an AT&T version and the cost is $25/month for 2GB, and you pay on a month by month basis.

You can turn 3G on and off as you please, but if you switch it on and off you still have to pay for the entire month. It's not contract-bound.
The 2 is significantly faster for anything except really basic tasks.

The cameras are not really a factor for me. I have my Thunderbolt and I bring my D7000 on all my jobs. I am not sure if it would be faster to use the mobile hotspot on my Thunderbolt running the 4gLTE or to just get a 3G (either version 1 or 2) and just use it when I feel like it. I would think it would be more beneficial to buy the 3g either way, just in case I decide later on to utilize it.
Use your TB hotspot, it will be faster than 3G. Save money and don't get either 1 or 2 with 3G built-in.
With the set up you have, look at getting Eye-Fi SD memory cards, with your TB LTE hotspot, you can transfer images to your iPad with no cables or adapters.

2G may have at least 1 more year of usability than the 1G. I can only assume that more power hungry software is on the way that will exclude the 1G. But as of today there isn't much that you can do with the 2G that the 1G can't do.
That's why he posted, he wanted to know what the "isn't much that you can do with the 2G that the 1G can't do" actually are.
If someone does not already own an iPad, I would recommend the iPad 2. In addition to being marginally faster in all 2D applications at the moment, sooner or later people are going to want to do things that are simply going to work better on the iPad 2.
If I already owned an iPad (1), I would not necessarily get rid of it to get the iPad 2.
That's just my opinion, based on owning both devices and having played with both of them rather extensively. The iPad 2 is good enough that I no longer daily carry a MacBook Pro, if that's any help. :-)

Well I went to Target and picked up a 32 GB second gen with Verizon 3G. It was all they had, and I am anxious to get this setup, so I just spent the extra. I am meeting with a client tomorrow morning and I would like to utilize it right away, and be able to show portfolio pictures and product images. Used properly, I think this will pay for itself very quickly, as I believe it will help me close jobs.
I do have a couple questions though.
1) I would like to setup subfolders in my picture albums. So I could have 1 folder that says Portfolio Images, and then under that have a separate folder for each job. I cannot do that with the photo viewer it comes with, at least not to my knowledge. Does anyone know of a viewer I can dl in the app store that will allow me to do this? Preferably one with a lite or free version to at least try out. I can purchase a full version if it works as I'd like.
2) Does the iPad use the same charger as the iPhone? I still have two or three wall chargers and three car chargers for my old iPhone 3G that I would like to be able to use if I can with the iPad.
Thanks also for your input on everything guys

2) the ipad can use the iphone charger. The ipad is more power hungry and some weaker 3rd party chargers or computers wont charge it. I think most of these problems have been resolved now. Basically i would use your ipad charger at home to charge your iphone/whatever as well.
try them all, they cant hurt it - if they dont have enough juice it just wont charge.
heres an article comparing the charging time:

you can get a camera kit from apple too so you can directly import pictures form your camera via usb or sd card/whatever.
You might as well thoroughly familiarise yourself with iTunes and iPhoto and how they integrate with iPhones and iPad. This is the best way to manipulate folders on the iPad.
There are also applications you can search for in both the regular App Store and in the Cydia (jailbreak) store that will allow you do manipulate folders on the iPad directly, or on your Mac and then replicate to the iPad.
Something like DocsToGo will do what you want, too. There's all kinds of ways to do it. :-)
Basically, yes. The iPad needs more power than the iPhone. If your iPhone charger isn't strong enough, the iPad will say that it is "Not Charging" but it really is...just at a slower pace.

If you search around, a lot of people are finding issues related to unsupported cards. No idea why. The only thing I can suggest is to only buy units that you can see from posts on the Apple Forums are devices that will really work.
Can you guys explain or post a link how to add subfolders in the default photo app? I do not want to add a third party viewer, and from the research I have done, I have not found a way short of jailbreaking which I do not want to do. It astonishes me that Apple would not build a subfolder system into the default program. Its a most basic and needed function.
Also, I do not have a Mac. I am running Windows 7 64 bit.

Adding a 3rd party veiwer isn't that bad when they cost $1-$3. To keep pictures organized all I do is point iTunes to the folder (on my hard drive) that I want the iPad to sync with. I then make folders within that folder.
You do this with a third party app? Which one?
with direct mode the eye fi card can send directly to the eye-fi app.
no need for a wireless router.
I remember seeing a thread about transferring images directly from a camera to the ipad utilizing a eye-fi card. I am interested in doing that if possible as well, but believe the iPad had to be jailbroken. Not sure if that has changed or not. I was looking around for a jailbreak for the iPad 2 and it looks like there is not yet. If I am wrong, please correct me.
no, it never had to be jailbroken.
the old way was you needed an eyefi card, a wireless router and then your ipad w/ the shuttersnitch app.
now with direct mode all you need is the eyefi card and ipad w/ the free eyefi app.
and yes there currently isnt a jailbreak out for the iPad2

2001Audi, I don't have an iPad but it seems like using something like Dropbox would be perfect for your photo needs.
2GB of free space (you can pay for more) that syncs across all devices it's set up on. Once synced, you don't need to be connected to the internet to access your content. It's stored locally.
Regular files and folders, just like you are used to.
Take a look if you like:

I already downloaded and the app is pretty horrible. In landscape mode, the left side of the screen is used to listing the folders and pictures. There is no option to view thumbnails, so I would either have to remember what each picture is titled if I am looking for something quick, or scroll through a bunch. Also, because the left side of the screen is used for the data, the image is much smaller. If upright, the images do not take up the whole screen either. I was hopeful, but its just not the right app for my needs.
Thanks. I am still a bit confused though. Are you saying you have folders in your photo album that contain subfolders within? And if yes, you are accomplishing this by simply syncing your folder that contains your photos and subfolders on your computer?
I have one folder on my hard drive "iPad Photo's" that is the folder I synced to my iPad and iPhone for photos, inside of the folder (on my harddrive) I have (currently) four folders (can make more when needed) I put images in each folder and that's how I see it on my iPad and iPhone.
