IE is redirecting me - can't get on internet

My laptop is having a problem getting on the internet. Here's whats been happening:
1. Open IE (Internet Explorer).
2. Everything is normal for about 5 minutes.
3. After the 5 minutes of normal operation, when I make an internet request, I get redirected - usually to an IP address that starts 69.128.... that's about all I remember before I shut down the computer.
4. When I try to start IE it will redirect me to this 69.128..... IP address.
5. I then need to go to System Restore and restore to an early date.
6. Start back at #1.

I use PC Tools Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus. At first whatever virus I have on my computer completely disabled my antivirus program. It was making it so my Spyware Doctor would open but all of the controls were greyed out so I could not use it. I was able to reinstall the software and I can now use it and it finds no infections.

Also, the System Restore is only giving me 1 day I can go back to where at used to give me multiple days to choose from.

How do I fix this?

Using my wife's computer to write this.

BTW - no I can't just get a Mac - no money

Try a different antivirus.. AVG or Avast... IF that does not work, try a different browser. FF, Opera, Etc..

Seriously, I run malwarebytes and NOD32 and call it a day. No attacks on the same setup since.

Update the hell out any software you run whenever possible for best results

another useful tool

http://devbuilds.kaspersky-labs.com/devbuilds/AVPTool/

download and run in safe-mode

I'd also delete all your system restore points in case infections were hiding in the system restore folder where the restore points are kept.

Have you checked another PC to see if it's actually just your PC or it maybe your internet is out?

Tools > Internet Options > Connections tab > LAN Settings...

Make sure "Use a proxy server for your LAN" is UNchecked. I've seen several types of viruses and spyware install proxy servers, which will redirect web browsing to their preferred sites. Also make sure your HOSTS file is clean.

"Use a proxy server for your LAN" was unchecked. How do I make sure my hosts file is clean?

Wipe the hard drive...start over...problem solved...make sure you back up your stuff before you do though.

Host file is consulted to make sure you have an IP address. If you do (looks like you do since you're on AZ), the website will open.

Since you can get on AZ I wouldn't worry if the host file is clean.

Open the HOSTS file in Notepad (it's in %windir%\system32\drivers\etc). The only line that should be active (no # in front of it) should be as follows:

127.0.0.1 localhost

If there are any other lines below that line that don't have a # in front of them, blow them out and save the file. Make sure it's saved as HOSTS (no extension on the file name).

Not necessarily. Some hacks of the HOSTS file will only redirect certain sites, not all of them.

Anyone ever see a computer go anywhere on the NET except any MS website? Not even windows updates?
Every cleaner I have access to all come back clean. There's nothing in the host file.
Tried safe mode, & even created another user account. No joy.
Tried a windows reg re-builder & a XP CD repair. Still nothing.
I never seen this before.
Need to try to avoid reinstall.

Specific browser or any browser? The empty windows update screen sounds faintly familiar. Was it a javascript or an XML update that was needed or missing?

Any browser, Page can't be displayed. Basic error page when there's no internet. But there is & I can go anywhere else, & even MSN messenger works. Microsoft.com doesn't come up either.

If this is happeing with any browser I think you should reconfigure your router (long shot, but...) Do you find any weird configurations on your router at all? Either that or the virus writer wrote the bug for IE and FF. Try Google Chrome too.

It's nothing router or HW related. The other PC"s on the cable connection are fine. The end user has the same problems on his connection at home or on his air-card.
