I need help choosing a laptop for $1k

anything out there for that price?

$1000u.s. or CHEAPER

its for my bro..started high school 2 weeks ago..so i guess i'l get him his first laptop.

he's only gonna be using MSN messenger, some internet browsing

he wants XP too..

what are some good cheap models?

i want it to be new...

get an IBM thinkpad t-series...(titanium alloy case)you can find then on ebay new in the box for like 800 (a p3 800 mHz t-21/22). Mine has DVD, 14.1 inch tft display, 20 gig hd, ethernet, keyboard illuminator, etc. Very thin and light. XP works great on em. Bulletproof. I've owned Dell's..plastic flimsy cases, and not too reliable.
