One of my friends is studying abroad in Australia and they are making her pay $8 for every 1 gb of internet she uses. I wasn't sure how much 1 gb of internet was or how long she could use it.

What i was thinking is that each webpage we go to averages about 0.8-1.5 mb. Also we were curious about how much internet she would use if she watched videos off of youtube, video chat with her family here in America, or chat on AIM.

Tell her to look into a verizon blackberry worldphone. It can be used as a data modem for a computer. The unlimited plan would cost less than $8/GB I think.

 

1 gig is an infinite (practically) amount of text - e-mail and messenger, etc.

I think it's a semi reasonable rate as far as browsing pictures, etc.

But once you start doing videos aka youtube - forget it.
Youtube video max size is 100 meg.
video chat may not be -too- bad since it's highly compressed, but you'll
still burn up bandwidth in a hurry.

If all she does is browse the web a little bit then it isn't a problem, aim and email. I have 30 gigs of seinfeld episodes and like 20 gigs of hd planet earths and at $8 a gig that could have gotten expensive.

Based on everyone I know who studied abroad, Australia has terrible internet plans/service.

lets just hope she doesn't have a massive pr0n obsession. She should also layoff the bit torrent/p2p filesharing too.
