We have Cox cable and we are getting ripped for our bundle so I'm calling today to cancel cable/phone and to possibly reduce internet package.

We have 100Mbps now If I switch to 50Mbps will it make a huge difference?

Let's say worst case scenario is 2 TV's streaming Netflix/pureflix etc one Ipad, and other wifi devices like phone/thermostat/computer etc

 

We had 30Mbps and were fine streaming with two computers. Sometimes if both were HD there would be some very slight lag on rare occasions but it wasn't severe enough for us to care. We have 50Mbps now and stream 2-3 comps/laptops at the same time with no problem. It's rare that they're all streaming HD at the same time though.

I've found that the larger factor is the quality of the connection. We had a 120Mbps wireless connection but I'd take the 30Mbps copper DSL any day. The 50Mbps is the highest we can go with copper, until they put in fiber. But it's solid as a rock - always puts out 50Mbps unlike the wireless which ranged from 10Mbps - 120Mbps depending on usage and load from other customers. Cox is pretty good (Xfinity around here - it's all Comcast at the end of the day) so I'd think 50 would be just fine.

 

Cable internet is wonky in that during peak times (when a lot of people are using it) and the node is overwhelmed, it will slow down anyway, You won't always get max speeds and will be throttled. I think you'll be fine with 50 MBps

 

If I can do 1 HD Netflix stream on tv and be on a laptop at the same time with a 6Mbps DSL connection, you'll be more than fine with 50Mbps.
