Will Hewlett-Packard's (NYSE: HPQ) slashing of the price of the discontinued TouchPad to $99 be the death blow for lower-volume tablet makers and in the long-run increase Apple's (AAPL) dominance with the iPad? Certainly it will put tablets in the hands of possibly a million consumers who would never have purchased one for $400 or more.

Estimates are that HP sold 350,000 units of their two tablet models at fire-sale prices over the weekend, after announcing they were discontinuing the TouchPad; $99 for the 16GB model, cut from $399; $149 for the 32GB model, cut from $499. The HP website and most retailers were sold out of both models within a few hours on Saturday.

However, a new supply of TouchPads could be made available at any time for the frustrated buyers who missed the first round of bargains. The dumping of cheap units on the market could hurt companies like Samsung or could even be a quick death blow for Research in Motion's BlackBerry PlayBook (NASDAQ: RIMM), which costs $499 for a 16GB model. The PlayBook was launched on April 19th. Both of those companies sell about half a million units per quarter.

Less likely to be negatively impacted is Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL), whose iPad sales have reached 9 million per quarter. And if some of the lower volume tablet manufacturers don't survive this wave of price cutting, it could give Apple even more of a hold on the market.

Big time. The Cost to build each tablet was just over $300 a pop.

EDIT: http://www.precentral.net/how-much-d...-cost-hp-build

The HP Touchpad hardware specs are phenomenal. Better than iPad and many other tablets. From the LCD to the Processor to the amount of RAM...This is why people are going nuts.

The only real reason holding the Touchpad back was lack of developer support (Apps) and I think people were also already "tabbed out" with iPad and Android dominating. webOS (for tablets) came along too late and people weren't interested.

Then either HP really hates their own product, or it's true that they're promoting webOS and this is their way of pouring money into the promotion.

are you sure about that? I thought the mark up on retail generally is 100%... so if it was $500 msrp, then the retailer pays $250.. which means the cost of production should be waaaaay less in order to make a profit.

Rest assured that we are filling valid orders on a first-come, first-served basis as long as we have inventory. At this time, we do not know if there will be sufficient inventory to fulfill your order. We hope to be able to get back to you on the status of your order in the next 24 hours if not sooner. If you would like to cancel your order, please do so.

Those rules depend on what category the item falls into. Electronics actually have narrower margin's then say clothing or other general merchandise. As a rule of thumb your comments are correct but it does not transfer to all categories.

Depends on what item is. Electronics, like PCs and tablets, have very low margins. Sometimes a retailer will take a loss on the PC hoping to make up difference by selling you attachments (i.e. extended warranty, software, carrying case, PC setup package, printer, printer cable, ink, paper, etc.)

I can find out what cost is for TouchPad tomorrow if anyone's curious.

HP TouchPad Carries $318 Bill of Materials
July 6, 2011
Andrew Rassweiler

The 32GB version of Hewlett-Packard Co.’s new TouchPad media tablet carries a bill of materials (BOM) of $318, according to the preliminary results generated by the IHS iSuppli Teardown Analysis Service from information and analysis provider IHS (NYSE: IHS).

When the $10.00 manufacturing cost is added in, the total cost to produce the high-end version of the TouchPad increases to $328. The compares to a retail price of $599. The low-end 16GB version of the TouchPad carries a BOM of $296, for a total of $306 when the manufacturing cost is factored in. The retail price for this model is $499.00.

The table below presents the preliminary estimate of the TouchPad BOMs and manufacturing costs from the IHS iSuppli Teardown Analysis Service. Please note that the assessment accounts only for hardware costs and does not take into consideration other expenses such as software, licensing, royalties and other expenditures.
